Allan, John: What's the deal with the "Honorable Mention (no winner will be declared)" statements?

Posted by: Dick Vohlers at June 23, 2006 05:40 AM

Dick,

While many articles were nominated, no one article received sufficient votes to be considered a winner.

Posted by: Allan Rothberg at June 23, 2006 07:29 AM

Hey Allan, just wondering what kind of vote totals did it take to "make the cut" for the respective categories? And, also curious what the vote totals were for various categories - do you guys post that somewhere? And, a last question - how is the winner in a category determined - votes, selection by some committee, etc?

Thanks in advance.

The Official CSR website looks like its overdue for a touch-up. The last winners-by-year it lists is 2003.

Posted by: Bowen Simmons at June 23, 2006 08:39 PM

Bowen,

Yeah, Alan E has some work queued up for him.

Doc,

The games that made the cut were the top vote getters in each category. The winner is simply the top vote getter.

Posted by: Allan Rothberg at June 23, 2006 10:22 PM

Thank Allan.

Posted by: Herr Dr at June 24, 2006 08:20 AM

Sure, but what about the categories with no winners, just honourable mentions? Presumably they only got a few voters, is that how that works? How few?

Regards, Mike

Mike,

The difference between no winners and honorable mentions is that no winners involved people and the mentions involved articles and the like.

Did anyone else vote for The Battle of the Little Bighorn as Best DTP-Produced Boardgame?

Posted by: Todd Zirkle at June 25, 2006 08:26 AM

Looking at this list, the first thing that comes to mind is (again) that the "Pre-WWII" category really needs to be split up. Comparing Crusader Rex and Triumph of Chaos in the same category is just wacky!

Posted by: Aaron Silverman at June 25, 2006 10:48 AM

I agree with that. Perhaps gunpowder pre-WWII and pre-gunpowder categories might be considered.

Posted by: Peter Pariseau at June 25, 2006 02:46 PM

Yes, there should be a new category added to separate eras better. I anticipate this will be rolled out next year.

Posted by: John Kranz at June 25, 2006 07:49 PM

Just noticed - no American Civil War games this year. No Battle of the Bulge games either? What gives?

Posted by: Herr Dr at June 26, 2006 04:19 PM

2006 is shaping up to be quite a year - Here I Stand, Epic of the Peloponnesian War and the usual blizzard of titles out in the summer. I've also seen quite a few compelling titles in the hopper for 2007 -and can't wait to see what Herman, Ted, Berg, etc have in store for us next year. GO WARGAMES!

Posted by: Herr Dr at June 26, 2006 06:42 PM

Forgot to give my 2 cents regarding the categories - I also think we do need a new category. I'd probably cut it off at 1860 (Pre American Civil War) - the other category being ACW > WWII. That would keep ACW and NAP seperate - usually a source of quite a few titles each.

I'd also add a simple "Wargame of the Year". Nominations would be generated by votes, but the award determined by a committee. Use a committee of 9 of the hobby giants for that - they are relatively easy to identify - bet most of us would concur on at least 7 of the names - a few designers, players, reviewers, game co people, etc.

As with anything, some additional marketing of the award would help. You would think the game co's (that have a vested interest in selling games), would kick in a few dollars for some advertisements promoting the awards. Might even tie it in with some of the summer conventions.

Sorry to see no HOF nominee. I truly believed this would be the year RBM finally got the nod!

Posted by: rick at June 27, 2006 05:01 PM

I'm sure Rodger appreciates your remarks. He has classified himself as ineligible for the HOF award given his formal formal involvement with the CSRs.

Posted by: John Kranz at June 28, 2006 06:17 AM

Yes, but can't RBM's declaration be overridden by unanimous acclamation. Like pulling together a write in campaign where everyone who votes, votes for his HOF status, regardless of his declining?

Posted by: Danny Wright at August 24, 2006 10:31 PM

Danny,

Who are you going to override the votes with?
