| BLOOD REEF: TARAWA Game Rating Commentary |
3.89
"The tactical and planning challenges this setting presents are great. The size factor is staggering, covering the landing of 6 marine battalions. Seaborne assault, air support, offshore fire support, all look great. The only downside is the rules are not really clear. The combination PTO based rules and sand (from the section on desert war) is convoluted. For example the Naval Bombardment rules for Tarawa have a small section in the Tarawa rules referring to desert and PTO sections, PTO section then refers to normal bombardment section. So chasing through everything takes some patience. But at the same time, if I wanted simple, I'd play "Risk". I'm very much looking forward to playing this, and am really glad that MMP had the guts to put out something of this magnitude. The rules could be a little clearer, and maybe a summary chart of sand effects would have helped, but overall looks really good. Now if they'll only do Normandy!"
"Something new for the ASL fan. Most of the campaign decisions are made before the CG starts. The USMC picks their order of entry and the Japanese devise their devilish defense. Many tense moments quickly follow. Beautiful map, cool battle, monster campaign game, What's not to like? Freakin Awesome!"
"The Red Barricades of the PTO, but even more intense and dramatic. Absolutely conveys the harrowing experience of the raging battle at Tarawa, as the Marines wade, slowly, *towards* a mass of IJA guns blazing away at them. Can they prevail, or will cardboard and emotional casualties run too high? If you play ASL, you must have this module."
"Incredibly intense. The ultimate in immovable object meets unstoppable force."
"Truly an ASL classic. It can give Red Barricades a challenge as the most gut-wrenching, exciting ASL experience. A must have for the ASL enthusiast."
"I've played one of the scenarios, but really want to get into one of the campaign games. Awesome map. I understand that during some playtest games no Marine's made it ashore on the first day! The landing is a bloodbath for the USMC. Just the thought of those Marines wading ashore is enough to make you appreciate what they accomplished historically."
"The grandeur of the full campaign is way cool, but the charm did wear off after the first playing. Probably not as much replay value as other ASL Historical modules."
"This is the first game that I have played that gives you all of the feel for the action. It is the best ASL module made!"
