CATAPHRACT Game Rating Commentary

"In true SPQR fashion this game is the game for whoever wants to simulate early Byzantine period battles. Don't forget the campaign game which plays different every time and shows the strategic situation Justinian (or Belisarius) had to cope with."

"I admit being a fan of the GMT's GBoH series despite it's obvious simulation issues. I think of them as being like Squad Leader - significant and obvious problems with implementation details, but an overall feel that seems to work out all right. Anyway, Cataphract is cool just because it goes against the grain of "bigger, better, more extravagant" to give us a much more approachable, playable, and - crucially - finishable GBoH. A certain measure of the improvement is admittedly just in the rulebook, where the influence of Stuart Tucker is apparently making itself felt to some degree (I personally felt many of the previous GBOAH rulebooks were extravagantly bad); but Cataphract overall is much streamlined with a great deal of chrome being hacked out. Anyway, if you like the historical period and don't mind something that is somewhat gamey, this is recommended. Can't comment much on the Justinian game "subgame" as I haven't played. The vibes are not good, though - I can't make it through the rulebook without getting bored, and whenever I pick it up again I can't remember what I read last time. Not a good sign."
