GAZALA Game Rating Commentary

"This appears to be a wide open, free-wheeling type of game that may not be much fun for the Commonwealth player. The ability of the Axis player to go for minefield breaches on the second turn combined with the high movement allowances remove some of the tension and feelings of imminent destruction that were key to the real battle."

"This one succeeds in conveying a sense of time and place that it's sister game, Crusader, does not."

"Once again the gamers has shown why they are the best in the business with the release of Gazala. The product looks great and has just the right amount of complexity for the hardened wargamer."

"It's a nice game that plays fast. Not the greatest thing going, but certainly better than most medium-sized desert games out there. Like all of the SCS games, it has a smooth play but feels a little too abstracted at times."

"This game has moved to the top of my SCS list and to my top ten list. A very tense situation for both sides. Lots of variety in each game due to different strategies for both sides, variable air power and supply (Axis mainly). Desert navigation, an optional rule, adds a very nice touch and is easy to implement."

"I didn't like the situation, not enough for the British to do. The movement rates are too high given reference maps of the historical unit dispositions by day, imo. The combat is too bloody...almost every attack results in a D2 or better...both sides spent more time looking for hiding places (there aren't any!) and it became an endless, yet dwindling, game of riposte, with the Germans coming out ahead because they have more stuff, and stronger one-step units after reconstitution. The Desert Nav rules are good."

"Strikes a fine balance between the overly simple Crusader and the ultimate of OCS."

"Looks great ... tastes OK. System would work a lot better if there were some sort of mid-opponent reaction phase. Otherwise, with all the high MA's, units sprint all over the place while their opponents stand as if someone had tied their shoelaces to a naked woman. The situation is a bit lopsided, too...but that's not that much of a drawback."

"To me the game captures the feeling of desert warfare. Flanks up in the air, swirling encirclements, quick moves result in a very tense exciting game. Played 2 solitaire games in prep for a PBEM match. Recommended!"

"Very different feel to any other wargame I have ever played. Wary waiting at a distance from the enemy followed by hit and run raids."
