TRIUMPH AND GLORY Game Rating Commentary

"T&G was too ambitious of a project for GMT, and it frankly falls flat. It would have been better to trim this package down to 3 battles, and then include the larger sized infantry counters that gamers have grown accustomed to. Weak rules development only adds to the frustration level. Even though I loved GLORY (ACW), I just couldn't get into this game...more effort than it's worth."

"T&G has done a remarkably good job of capturing the ebb and flow of Napoleonic battlefields at the grand tactical level without bogging itself down with minute (and sometimes ahistorical or inaacurate) micromanagement rules that usually plague games of the period. Funky things will occasionally occur due to the activation system, but are exceptions and definitely not the norm."

"Might be a spiteful rating, but the developer trashes anything that fails in the ability to be extremely historical in his mind, then agrees to develop a game that is nothing more than draw a color and move it. Totally devoid of realism or history. This is Candy Land."

"Convoluted, poorly written, and poorly designed. I liked Bergs other game Glory, but this one is a failure. Pretty graphics alone don't make a good game."

"In contrast to River of Death, the LIM method seems to work for me in this context."

"Ummm ... what was that about cavalry charges? And artillery facing? Are we sure the living rules are finalized now? Beautiful components. Could have used another round of development. Still, I'm sure there's a very good game in there."

"The game is a poor model of Napoleonic combat. The command system is awful. Rather than simulating the chaos of the battlefield and the best laid of plans going astray, its just a random series of activations. Needs to be redone."

"Disappoints across the board to the extent I question GMT's wisdom in publishing it. Arbitrary units are identified with indecipherable abbreviations of incorrect brigadiers. Pointless icons are too small to see sloppy artwork. Undisciplined design offers 3 kinds of Jaeger retreat and Orders Commands redundant with Activation Groups. Cavalry charges reworked after publication. Vague rules never present thought out procedural sequence, and living rules have not been exploited to correct the poor development. Game was advertised as using tournament tested rules - the Vae Victus version - but contrast in completeness is glaring. In play, the advances, retreats, and benefits of strongpoint defensive lines leads to muddled deep mass representing battle lines. LIM system maintains suspense, but is this Napoleonics?"

"Falls between two stools: not simple enough to be a beginner's guide to Napoleonic grand tactics; not detailed enough to be a realistic simulation of the Napoleonic battlefield. This isn't helped by rules that were riddled with omissions and inconsistencies. The game is playable with the living rules as currently posted but all it has really done is to whet my appetite for GMT's forthcoming Austerlitz."

"The rules are not very clear BUT the design is cool ,historical & easy to play. This games was pretest by 4 Vae-Victis games befor. I propose you read those rules befor you start a game .It will help and you gonna have fun."

"While it seems there were lots of rules problems, I still think this was a very good game."

"Boring. The Austrians moved in a series of disjointed activations. More random than friction of war. Looks great, plays lousy."

"The same tired cookie cutter system applied to yet another game. I'm looking forward to Austerlitz 1805 because at least its a new system."
