WAR GALLEY Game Rating Commentary

Most Excellent
3.53

"It's a clean system with loads of subtlety that needs to be discovered with repeated playing and repeated experimenting."

"Okay, maybe I am overstating things a bit, but it is hard to find a game that is playable without insulting your intelligence. Fortunately, this one fits the bill. War Galley is part of a needed trend in wargaming, namely fast, playable games that can be enjoyed in one sitting. The game does not skimp on details, but does gloss over smaller points to keep the tempo of play going."

"Clean system on a fascinating and unique era of naval combat. 13 scenarios with ample opportunity for build your own and additional historical add-ons."

"It strikes a good balance between historical detail and ease of play. Relatively short, concise rules allow it to enjoyed by the newcomers to the hobby. Excellent multi-player possibilities."

"I played Trireme a few times, but this one is way ahead of the pack."

"The artwork on the book is just awesome. The battles that I have played have been fun. I believe that this game may even be better then Wooden Ships and Iron Men."

"Gorgeous graphics, exhaustive selection of scenarios, relatively simple mechanics but tactically subtle. Could use some errata and clarifications. Richard Berg is a great designer but a poor rule writer."

"This game is very interesting due to the multiple tactics you can implement. Even with the same scenario, it is hard to formulate what is the best plan. There is much more flexibility compared to SPQR or Alexander."

"The naval version of GBOH, with counters everywhere. The ships move around more than land units in GBOH (surprise there) and the action is less predictable and more intense. Lots of die-rolling, but the tables are easy to follow and the rules are simpler than the land-based GBOH (although that's getting better, too.). A gazillion counters. Keep them sorted by number when you punch them out, or you'll be a long time putting a scenario together."

"We played this one at the Le Marshalate meeting last weekend. Jumped right into a 30+ vs. 30+ battle and soon had a mass of wrecked, entangled ships brawling and burning, just as I'd expect! Quick read, solid rules and feels like galley fighting is supposed to. We liked it."
