Summer Storm (COA)
Totaler Krieg! (Decision) |
|
Biography
|
|
Been wargaming since I picked up Jutland and Midway new at the
neighbor's annual toy garage sale (he worked for a toy company)
for $2.00 each back in 1970 & have been playing wargames ever
since. I am 39 and married with one kid. The only other con I
have ever attended is Gencon the last three years. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I picked Summer Storm since I was really excited about it (Maypo
anyone) until it was finally published. Since then I haven't been
able to sit down and take the time to learn to play the darn thing.
My alternate choice is Totaler Krieg. I have had limited play
experience with the original and would really like to have a chance
to play TK too. |

Wacht Am Rhein (SPI) |
|
Biography
|
|
What's to say? I'm a software engineer from Raleigh-Durham, NC.
I've been gaming for 20 years now. 31, married, no kids. I've
had a surprising amount of trouble finding a wargaming group that
is close enough that I can play on a regular basis. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I had some great times playing World In Flames in the early 90's.
I consider myself at the low end of intermediate. I feel that
all the expansions to WiF (Planes in Flames, Ships in Flames,
etc) have added an undue level of complexity to the game. The
basic 5.0 set had the right mix of detail, complexity and playability.
The expansion modules have changed that.
Wacht am Rhein - I'm a total novice. I only put it down because
some of my friends will be playing it. |

Biography

I have been playing historical war games since 1973 when I saw
a copy of Panzerblitz at Sears. I own Game HQ, Inc., a game shop
in Oklahoma City. We have a large gaming area and I try to squeeze
in board wargames in between the Magic and Pokemon players <g>.
Actually, we do a board game night every Thursday night, but we
do not do the "Monster games" very often so I am happy to have
this opportunity to play some of my favorites - World in Flames,
Advanced Third Riech, and Empires in Arms. |
|
MonsterGame.CON

I have played World In Flames since second edition. I have not
played the final edition yet, but hope to be up to speed on that
soon. I have played Advanced Third Riech MANY times. I look forward
mainly just to getting to play these old favorites. I look to
playing more as a relaxing enjoyment than a fierce competition. |

Pacific War (Victory)
Empire in Arms (AH) |
|
Biography
|
|
I am a married 34 year old Purchasing Manager in Phoenix, who
has been playing wargames since the age of 12. I enjoy most strategic
level games, but especially prefer playing long strategic simulations
in person. I own many Avalon Hill titles myself, but do not limit
myself to playing only these games. This will be the first gaming
convention that I have been able to attend, and I am looking forward
to participating in the activities as well as playing the games. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I have selected Pacific War by Victory Games for the simple reason
that I have never had a chance to play the game against an opponent
and I think its system is very unique among games that I have
played. My second choice is Empires in Arms by Avalon Hill. I
was a member of a group in college that played this game extensively,
but I have not revisited it in over 10 years. I am looking forward
to the dynamics of this multi-player game. |

East Front Series (GMT)
Wacht Am Rhein (SPI) |

Biography
|
|
I'm 54 years old & have been gaming actively 29 years. Although
I was born, raised, & worked on the East Coast, I am now retired
& have lived in Tucson, AZ. for almost 5 years with my wife. My
main interests are wargaming & military history(duh), cycling,
hiking, & cooking. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
My first preference (GMT's East Front Series) reflects my interest
in WWII operational-level games. "Wacht am Rhein" is a long-time
favorite, partly because I lived in Luxembourg three years & enjoyed
touring the Ardennes.
I look forward to playing the East Front series, because it is
currently my favorite game(s). I have only played the 4 games
solitaire, and look forward to playing them with others and also
to putting the three Barbarossa games together. "Wacht am Rhein"
is also a long-time favorite. I've played it extensively, but
not for a long time. |

Highway to the Reich (SPI)
Korsun Pocket (PWG) |

Biography
|
|
I am a graduate film student at Loyola Marymount University, in
Los Angeles, and I am wrapping up the editing and sound work on
my 2nd short film. I returned to school after working several
years as a film and video editor. I am training in directing and
screenwriting, and of course hope to produce historical films
and TV shows. I have been playing wargames since 1969, with an
absence of 10 years from '79-89. I love old SPI titles, but also
enjoy GMT, COA, and Gamers. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I would be happy playing 90% of the games listed. I picked Highway
to the Reich and Korsun Pocket due to their size and rarity (even
though I have both of these games). I am also interested in Streets
of Stalingrad, and the BAR series (mainly because I want to learn
how to play these), La Bataille de Moskowa, and Bloody April.
After working many hours on my film and interning with a major
film producer at Paramount, I am dying to play some wargames and
forget about filmmaking for a while. |

Biography
|
|
I'm 34, married, and have two boys (ages 9 and 13). I'm a tech
writer for Intel in Chandler, AZ. I have been gaming since 1979
or so. The first game I bought was Panzer Leader, and I quickly
moved on to Russian Campaign, Third Reich, Squad Leader, and many
others. Lately I have been playing a lot of Advanced Third Reich
and some ASL. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I really enjoy the historical ASL modules, especially Red Barricades.
I am looking forward to playing with some new opponents. I have
been playing SL/ASL off and on for 18 years now; I would rate
myself an average player.
I would also like to try some A3R/ERS once the HASL event winds
down. I have been playing the 3R system since 1980; I have been
playing A3R once a week for the last 5 years, and I think I am
pretty good. I have not played much ERS (~10 games), so it would
be nice to give that a try with some experienced players. |

Biography

I am 53 yrs. old. I have been wargaming since age 15. My primary
historical periods of interest are Ancient and Middle ages. But
I play most other periods also. WWI, WWII, and modern such as
Arab-Israeli Wars, Korea, and Vietnam. I have experience in Europa,
War In Europe, War in the Pacific, XTR's WWI game to name some
of the big monster games. I'm looking forward to playing one of
these to a conclusion if possible with likeminded people. |
|
MonsterGame.CON

War In Europe as first choice: I haven't played this in a long
time but have played it from beginning to end. I have also played
scenarios mostly Russian front. With a production system for the
Allies now, I would like to try this out.
Wellington's Victory, 2nd choice: This is one of my all time favorites
even though I'm not a big Napoleon fan. I have played it to a
conclusion at least 3 times. I also haven't played it in a while.
I'm looking forward to meeting people of likeminded interests

big games from The Gamers, GMT and Clash of Arms. I'm on the design

Biography

I'm a computer programmer working in Spokane, WA. Been a programmer

games - all periods - all levels. Mostly ASL, WiF, and EiA are
my regular gaming diet (i.e. I have opponents willing to play
these) with a smattering of GBoH and EFS and others (S&T, Command,
etc) as opportunity arises. |

First: Korsun Pocket - a golden oldie - played the campaign game
five times in the 1980 to 1982 time frame. I have always liked
this game immensely and it's predecessor Wacht am Rhein.
Second: Der Weltkrieg - never played it - system looks great graphically
and with very interesting mechanics. I would like to play the
grand linked version of all 1914. If it plays well I might convince

Operation Typhoon (SPI)

Biography

|
I started wargaming in 1977 when I got a copy of SPI's War of
the Ring one Christmas. Soon after, I lost interest in it and
turned to historical wargames, as military history (particularly
WWII) is sort of a hobby of mine. Since those early days, I have
been gaming off and on as time allows. Currently I am more of
a collector than a player, but I would like to change that. |
|
MonsterGame.CON

My first choice is Operation Typhoon. I bought a copy of it on
Ebay just a week or two ago and am dying to play it with someone!
I have no previous experience with it, but will have read the
rules by the time I get to the convention. Also, I am familiar
with the PGG game system, although it has been many years since
I played that game...
My second choice is This Terrible Sound. I have no experience
playing this game either, but I have played one of The Gamer's
CWB games solitaire (Champion Hill). I'm hoping it won't be much
of a stretch to go from CWB to RSS. |

Third World War Series (GDW)
Great War in Europe/Near East (XTR) |
|
Biography
|
|
Picked up the wargaming bug in high school; a buddy and I would
spend hours on weekends with AHs' Blitzkrieg. Then after college,
the town I lived in supported a suprisingly large (for the towns'
size) game club. I was exposed to many of the SPI classics (remember
that old cartoon 'Expose yourself to Art'?? uh..never mind), and
Victory Games and GDW were in their prime. This is where I first
fell in love with GDWs' WWIII. The club set up the combined game
3-4 times on one of the members' 5x10 ping pong table, and ran
it through (gently, with a twist). Since then, my involvement
in the sport (er..hobby) has been with my friends Brian, Dave,
and Linden, from Sonoma County, NoCal. Clash 'O Arms w/Dave, 1815
w/Brian, innumerable XTR GWiE/NE w/Brian and Linden (we know it
as Groundhog Day), and GBoH, OCS, and MiH Marlborough (I forget
the name) with Linden.

Biography

Been playing "Military" board games for about 20 years. Play several
but prefer the ASL Game System above all. I enjoy hiking, tennis,
motorcycles, and scenario/game design. Have been a history "nut"
since I was 7. Grew up on books at the library and the old "Combat"
TV series. I've written some articles for Critical Hit Magazine,
and am currently working on an HASL project which I hope to submit
to MMP soon. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I selected the HASL games from MMP because of the attention to
detail plus the playability. My first love is history, and this
has been the closest thing I've seen to actually recreating it
on a tabletop. I've been playing since the old SL days back in
the early 80's. I would rate myself an average player. I play
to enjoy the game first, then to win. I always pick up a new "pointer"
or two everytime I play in a tourney, and hope to learn something
new this time out. Of course, winning would be fun too! |

East Front Series (GMT) |

Biography

I am a 41 year old engineer originally from the San Diego area
but moved to the Silicon Valley 17 years ago to pursue my career.
I played my first wargame nearly 30 years ago. In the past 5 years
I have been playing fairly regularly; mostly WW2 games but have
recently been interested in the Civil War as well. I play games
as a hobby and as a way to learn more about the history and reasons
behind why some battles and wars turned out the way they did. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I was initially going to play in the East Front Series. I have
recently been playing AGN and enjoyed it quite a bit. But since
I will be able to play a monster-like game at the GMT gaming weekends
I thought that I would rather play in This Hallowed Ground.
THG is THE Gettysburg game. The command system shows how difficult
it is to maneuver such large forces. I have played a few games
of the Civil War Brigade system games so I was able to pick up
the RSS system pretty easily. I was able to play in the RSS game
at Homercon West so I now get another chance to play a monster
Civil War game with excellent graphics for the map and counters. |

Vietnam '65-'75 may be one of the most elegant designs I have
ever played. The combination of political and military; tactical

One of the tensest, immersive games in existence.
Second choice was so much more difficult. Any of the traditional
SPI monsters would serve. War Between the State was selected in
memory of good times of winning the war as the south in 1862 against
my yankee friend! A nice game with much underlying strategy driving
an, on the surface, bland game. |

Alternatively, World in Flames used to be my favorite game. However,
I stopped at the 5th Edition and I'm concerned that I no longer
"speak current WiF" (I'm of the opinion that the constant tinkering
and expansion of that game has not been for the best...). |

New WAR sounds very cool. |

will challenge it. |

HASL Campaign (sponsored by MMP)
Enemy at the Gates (Gamers) |
|
Biography
|
|
I'm from Flagstaff, Arizona and I've been playing wargames since
1980 or so. I started with Tactics II and then moved on to War
at Sea. From there I got into Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader which
naturally led to Squad Leader. I've been primarily playing ASL
lately although I occasionally get the chance to play some operational
and standard level games from The Gamers. |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
I picked ASL because that's the game I'm most familiar with and
playing some obscene, large historical scenarios has a certain
charm. I picked EatG as my second choice because I never really
get the chance to play my Gamers titles at home. |

Wacht Am Rhein (SPI)
Hitler's Last Gamble (3W) |
|
Biography
|
|
I have been gaming for 32 years. I started w/ AH BOB and now do
mostly computer gaming. I have played Wacht Am Rhein many times,
and I have substantially modified some rules sections and have
developed a map extension on the north edge to include Liege.
I have played many of the games listed for the con and hope to
share thoughts, strategies, rules interpretations and changes
with the players in attendance. My motto: ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!!!! |

Pacific War (Victory)
Totaler Krieg! (Decision) |
|
Biography
|
|
My first boardgame was AH's Midway. But for a brief diversion
to computer games in the early 80's I've been boardgaming steadily
as time permits (and there's precious little of that it seems).
Current passions include TK!, Gamer's OCS and Up Front! |
|
MonsterGame.CON
|
|
Having started the hobby with a naval game, I always find myself
drawn to those time & again (Flat Top, Submarine and PACWAR when
time permits). I've just never been able to experience the full
flavor that PACWAR has to offer and am looking forward to playing
with others who know the system (that I enjoy it so much solitaire
ensures I will not be disappointed by FTF).
When Krieg! came out I thought there was no better ETO game to
be had, until TK! came along. I play no other in this scale now.
With each playing I discover some new nuance, much depth w/o overcomplicated
mechanics. Ah that I could play both.... <g> |

Korsun Pocket (PWG)
East Front Series (GMT) |
|
Biography
|
|
Lieutenant Colonel Eric Walters, USMC is the Assistant Chief of
Staff, G-2 (Intelligence) of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing currently
based in Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, CA. He has
been a wargamer for over 25 years, playtesting ADVANCED SQUAD
LEADER RULES and TURNING POINT: STALINGRAD for Avalon Hill, PHASE
LINE SMASH for GDW, and SEMPER FIDELIS (computer game) for InterActive
Magic. He is a professor of Intelligence, Military History, and
Land Warfare for the American Military University and also is
an adjunct professor for the Marine Corps University College of
Continuing Education, Command and Staff College. Monstergames
played to "completion" (or darned close to it): WAR IN EUROPE,
WAR IN THE EAST, KORSUN POCKET, WACHT AM RHEIN, OPERATION TYPHOON
(SPI), TERRIBLE SWIFT SWORD (1st Ed), STREETS OF STALINGRAD (1st
Ed), WINTER STORM, HIGHWAY TO THE REICH, DESCENT ON CRETE, RED
BARRICADES CG II, KAMPGRUPPE PEIPER I, KAMPFGRUPPE PEIPER II CG
II. |

Played KORSUN POCKET for two semesters in my senior year of college--it
was (and to me still is) the premier Eastern Front monstergame.
Haven't played this game in 20 years, so I'm doing this for nostalgia's
sake. GMT's EAST FRONT series is one I've only dabbled with (TYPHOON)
but I want to play more of it. Normally I'd pick an HASL module,
but it's easier to find opponents (and time) for that; playing
the really big ones (and older ones, like KORSUN POCKET) is much
harder to do. What do I look forward to the most? Seeing all these
old games spread out and watching the ebb and flow of these battles
over a long period of time.
Special Consideration: I won't be available until May 26th (Saturday) morning--the
25th I'll be traveling. Will have to depart the morning of the
28th (Monday). |

The Civil War bug bit me hard four or five years ago. This past
summer I visited several battlefields for the first time, Gettysburg
among them, and was very moved by the experience. On returning
home and hauling out THG I found I had an even higher regard for
the pains taken with this huge, majestic game.
I've played every CWB game from the Gamers and both games in their
regimental series, but, unfortunately, these have all been solo.
My only meaningful ftf experiences with them have been in the
form of short scenarios and even these were not played to completion.
So, I suppose, I'm looking most forward to having the chance to
play out the whole dang battle in one long shot. |
