Which CIV is the Better CIV?

Alves Ferreira poses the following question on the rec.board.games Newsgroup:

"CIVILIZATION or ADVANCED CIVILIZATION, which one would you pick?"

This has been one of the more interesting discussions to follow. The basic premise of comparing CIVILIZATION to ADVANCED CIVILIZATION is much akin to the common debate contrasting SQUAD LEADER to ADVANCED SQUAD LEADER. While most have expressed that ADVANCED CIV is the hands-down winner, there have been some opposing views posted, such as that of Tony Atkinson:

"ADVANCED CIVILIZATION is a dumbing down of the superb basic CIVILIZATION design by making things a little less ruthless and a bit more friendly...ADVANCED CIV allows you to recover from mistakes, stops people from being nasty with disasters and makes the trading less vicious."
