Maneuver Warfare Debate Continues to Rage on Operational Combat Series

Gary Robinson has generated a flury of online activity that shows no signs of letting-up at the ConsimWorld Discussion Board regarding his comments regarding the Art of Maneuver Warfare as depicted in the Operational Combat Series (OSC), published by The Gamers:

"I think the bottom line is some players here, and others on the SCS [Standard Combat Series] topic, agree with me that raids a hundred miles or more in the enemy rear to nail a truck or big dump are unrealistic, especially if they require zooming right past a bunch of mechanized units that are in the way; big garrisons that far back are equally unrealistic. Other players do not mind garrisoning everything and do not see a problem, or else feel that raids risk valuable units for limited gains. I of course am in the first group - a raid which loses a recon unit in return for destroying a truck or two and cutting the rail line in Tunisia is not a "limited gain," it is a devastating blow - but so it goes."

The comments above were posted on 8 October, and has generated no less than 240 direct responses in the past 20 days...making this one of the hottest-moving topics at ConsimWorld.COM. OCS Game System Designer, Dean Essig, has himself chimed in to provide his design prospective to the series, and how it properly captures the art of maneuver warfare on the Eastern Front.

On 29 October, Gary illustrates his position with the following illustration, and comments:

"Defense in depth" to me refers to the tank brigade guarding the road, backing up the infantry units at the front. As the German here, I would simply put my units in road mode, race past the Soviet units, across the bridge, and attack the HQ and/or move into the woods to grab the dump. How exactly did I know there was a dump hidden in those woods 5 miles away from town, before I even started to move? My idea of defense in depth is having a unit 5 or 10 miles back, guarding the road. In OCS, you can simply drive around this unit, while it stands there stupidly, and go back into enemy territory and smoke out a dump hidden in the woods 40 miles behind the front. Come on.

Doug Fitch (one of many active participants in this debate) demonstrates an opposing viewpoint:

"Interesting example, but I'd say the Russian player needs to have his head examined if he thinks that deployment will win him any battles. There are a lot of things the Soviet should or should not have done depending on the overall situation. The game is hardly broke because the Soviet suffers from bad play. From the tone of your post, though, the only thing to fix your problem is to play double-blind. Defense in depth with 3 units?! Come on."
