WACHT AM RHEIN Redux For Year 2000? |
reported by John Kranz
A few eyebrows have been raised recently at the ConsimWorld.COM Discussion Board with Joe Youst's disclosure that a remake of the famous SPI Monster Game, WACHT AM RHEIN, is currently under consideration. Noted game designer and map artist, Mark Simonitch, is said to be teaming up with Joe Youst on this special project, which would ultimately be licensed under Decision Games, who purchased the rights to most SPI titles from TSR several years ago. Both personalities have solid game design experience. Youst is known for his detailed Eastern Front design, SPIRES OF THE KREMLIN (which showed promise but lacked refinement in some areas) and yet-to-be-released ROAD TO BERLIN (seven years overdue from Pacific Rim Publishing) - Simonitch has provided some top-notch game designs including THE LEGEND BEGINS and CAMPAIGN TO STALINGRAD.
This release would entail a significant remake of the original game, according to Joe Youst.
"We are talking completely new graphics and counters, updated Order of Battle, and new artillery and exploitation subsystems to make the game more fluid and realistic. This would not be an inexpensive game - we are talking on the order of $75 to $85."
Online discussions now taking place are focusing on some of the finer nuances of the proposed game system. You can catch it all be visiting the WACHT AM RHEIN Discussion Topic. The earliest possible release of this title would be Year 2000, so no one should hold their breath to expect this title anytime soon. Then again, a project of this magnitude does require this amount of time for proper game development and testing.
The bean counters at Decision Games needed worry if a WACHT AM RHEIN remake would sell - it's the Battle of the Bulge, after all. This could well be the biggest seller since DAK was released by The Gamers. Only a remake of SPI's WAR BETWEEN THE STATES proposed several years ago by GMT Games (a Berg/Herman/Billingsley project) could draw equal billing.
