XTR recently launched the internet's first all-on-line military history magazine, BATTLEFLAG.COM. A forward-looking endevour to be sure. None of the articles appearing at the Web site represented reprints from paper-Command, nor was the intention to reprint the online articles in paper-Command. There were simply enough article submittals being generated by XTR's office to pursue a second venue of publishing.
The first issue was posted online in order to generate interest, and subsequently, the needed subscriptions to secure the future of the online publication. Unfortunately, as reported by Ty Bomba below, the Web site has been officially canceled due to a lack of needed subscriptions. The official announcement from Ty Bomba follows:
"We've taken the decision to shut down the BattleFlag.com website. That's because, despite our best efforts at promoting it, we weren't able to sign up more than two dozen subscribers. We figured at the start of the project we'd need 800 subscribers within four months to make the thing worthwhile.
The few who did subscribe will be receiving refunds.
Since so few people actually read the BF.C articles, I'm going to contact their authors and tell them I want to use their stuff in Command.
I guess the best that can be said about this experience is that we we're apparently a few years ahead of things. There's still considerable consumer resistance to buying non-pornographic "information" over the internet. (And, yes, we looked into accepting advertising; but the number of hits you need to make that work is nothing short of fantastic.)"
Ty BombaThe news of BattleFlag's sudden demise was met with disappointment. Based on the limited time to garner subscriptions and market the publication (four months time to achieve an 800 member subscription base), it appears that BattleFlag was simply under-capitalized from the get-go and never had a chance for success, which is unfortunate.
Perhaps one day there will be a truly profitable, all-on-line military history magazine. Until then, the playing field remains wide open.
