| October 31, 1999 - Out of the Wrapper EYLAU Marks Revival of Eagles of the Empire Series |
Avalanche Press has appeared to remain "in quarters" when it comes to the Napoleonic Front with their publishing focus having shifted to growing the popular Great War at Sea series (now five titles strong), and expanding their product line to family-style (non-wargame) titles.
Having released two previous titles under their Eagles of the Empire game series, BORODINO and FRIEDLAND (out of print) several years ago, EYLAU marks Avalanche's official return with a renewed vigor to highlight the major battles of Napoleon. Rather than simply continue the Eagles of the Empire game series, which has received somewhat mixed reviews due to the uniqueness of the game system, the design staff at Avalanche Press has revised and effectively "re-introduced" the game series with a more approachable game system.
Initial impressions voiced thus far on the ConsimWorld.COM Discussion Board have been favorable. It appears Avalanche will not only win back those who admire the original game series, but welcome new Napoleonic gamers to the fold as well with this new game series treatment. Many are already clamoring for Avalanche to effectively refit the prior two game releases based on the revamped system depicted in EYLAU. The presentation of the Series rules is particularly impressive, with the large set typeface (including illustrations) and interesting setup "briefs" for each scenario included with the game. The only apparent production lapse is not providing Designer Notes those interested in learing more will want to visit the ConsimWorld Discussion Board. It's recommended to laminate the attractive scenario brief sheets for added protection and durability.
For those who haven't yet ventured into this game series, it appears that EYLAU may well satisfy those looking for a unique take on Napoleonic warfare, as this third release of the Eagles of the Empire series may have been well worth the wait.
The Situation
The Emperor had achieved his greatest victory only four months earlier at Jena-Auerstadt, crushing the Prussian army and state. But now, in the dead of winter, Prussia's ally, the Russians, under General Levin Bennigsen forced the Emperor to roust his victorious but weary troops from their winter quarters and set the stage for a confrontation between the two continental giants. Would this too end in another stunning victory for the Emperor of the French or would a different outcome await Napoleon in the snows of East Prussia? The Game
EYLAU is a grand tactical simulation of the Battle of Eylau, fought on February 7th and 8th, 1807. This game marks the third entry of the Eagles of the Empire game series, recreating the famous battles of Napoleon Bonaparte, his Marshals, and the great generals during the Napoleonic Wars from 1795 to 1815.The game series features a unique area-movement system to reflect the decisions faced by commanders during the Napoleonic Wars. This title introduces a revised game system to strengthen game play and enhance the game's over all feel of a Napoleonic battle.
