LOS GRINGOS Covers Smaller Battles of Mexican-American War

Release date: March 1999

The latest BSO release from Richard Berg covers some of the smaller battles of the Mexican-American War, using mechanics and systems designed for easy accessibility and repeat play. The rules are 6 pages short, and all of the games can be completed in less than 4 hours … easily. However, every attempt has been made to provide the serious historical gamer with a solid dose of history. Each of the battles, below, presents the players with different, and sometimes unusual, "gaming" situations.

PALO ALTO
Texas, May 8, 1846. In the first "battle" of the war, Zachary Taylor’s Army of Observation faces off, set-piece style, against Manual Arista’s Army of the North. In the real battle, both generals were overly cautious: Taylor feared the Mexican cavalry (he didn’t need to) and Arista feared the US artillery (and rightfully so, as the battle showed). However, gamers rarely shrink from the task … and Palo Alto becomes a nice, Napoleonic-era linear battle with lots of maneuvering and jostling for position. It even has a grass fire!

RESACA DE LA PALMA
Texas; May 9, 1846. Zach Taylor’s, having just defeated the Mexicans at Palo Alto, marches south. The Mexican army under Arista, takes a most advantageous position astride a "resaca" - partially dry river bed - surrounded by almost impenetrable chaparral and awaits the gringos in what looks like a masterful ambush deployment. Into this "ambush" marches Taylor, outnumbered by at least 2-to-1. How did he win?

RIO SACRAMENTO
Chihuahua; February 28, 1847. A US expedition, under Alexander Doniphan, is launched to protect Taylor’s right and capture Chihuahua province. Both Doniphan’s army, and the Mexicans defending at Rio Sacramento under General Heredia, are amateurs in every sense of the word. But the Mexicans have great numbers (4-to-1) and great position (heavily fortified and elevated). And Doniphan’s got that endless wagon train. Even so, the gringos are favored. Find out why!!

GAME COMPONENTS
Each game includes Basic and Battle Rules, your DTP-style cut-and-paste countersheet of marvelously colorful 255 counters, and two 22"x17 battle maps, and one 11" x 17" map.

For the first 100 gamers who buy GRINGOS, BSO will send a 4th battle - El Brazito - absoutely free. Granted, El Brazito wasn’t much of a battle … the Mexican army of locals there quickly determining they were ill-suited to that sort of venture - but it is a great way to see how the mechanics work.

All this for only $26 ($27 in Mexico/Canada; $29 Overseas)
