RIVER OF DEATH Marks Rebirth of GBACW Series on a Grand Scale

River of Death Cover
Release date: October 1999

The long-anticipated rules upgrade for THREE DAYS OF GETTYSBURG has ultimately evolved and surfaced with the latest and grandest Great Battles of the American Civil War (GBACW) project yet, RIVER OF DEATH. GMT Games knew they would need to deliver big on this revamped game system as several other fine game releases have since been released (SUMMER STORM by Clash of Arms and THIS HALLOWED GROUND by The Gamers). By polishing up the GBACW game series, GMT Games not only delivers an insightful view into the Battle of Chickamauga, but ultimately breathes new life into THREE DAYS OF GETTYSBURG (the upgrade for this game is expected shortly).

While a complication did arise with map printing problems for this latest installment, GMT Games did make good on the customer service front by quickly replacing the faulty maps. The problem is resolved, and the maps are stunning in quality and detail. Customers will also be pleasantly surprised to find along with a note of apology due to delays in delivery, an additional scenario — "The Rock of Chickamauga," depicting Thomas' stand on the last day of the battle.

The Game
RIVER OF DEATH is the first game to take a regimental look at the last major Confederate victory, the Battle of Chickamauga -- September, 1863. Fought in dense, entangled woods, the battle was a microcosm of good plans going awry, individual units fighting away while not knowing what was happening 100 yards away, and remarkable heroic stands.

RIVER OF DEATH uses the latest version of the famous Great Battles of the American Civil War system, featuring a brand new look at Command and Control. By making each turn one hour, and allowing divisions/corps to have a variable number of activations within that time frame, and by keeping such information secret, the command system has a Fog of War layer that simulates much of the chaos and havoc that characterized the battle.

RIVER OF DEATH is a big battle, the biggest, in area covered, the GBACW system has attempted. It is also one of the most fascinating, play-oriented situations in the entire ACW canon, with an endless stream of reinforcements and constantly moving armies. The battle, but not the rules, severely tests the wits and abilities of the players, making this one of the most interesting battles in the entire war.
