A BRIDGE TOO FAR Hails Official Return of ASL Series

Bridge Too Far cover
Release date: October 1999

The recent acquistion of Avalon Hill by Hasbro put the future of Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) officially on hold, along with the rest of AH's historical game titles. The first silver lining in the Hasbro-Avalon Hill cloud has emerged as Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) has stepped forward to continue and expand that gaming legacy known as the Advanced Squad Leader series, by retaining an exclusive license to publish future ASL titles. The initial fruits of this commitment arrive by way of a one-two punch, with two new Historical ASL modules. The production quality of these releases is top-notch; consistent with the quality work Avalon Hill has produced in the past.

Historical Background
Operation Market-Garden was underway. The elite British 1st Airborne Division was tasked with securing the furthest objective, the road bridge across the Lower Rhine in Arnhem, Holland. Nearly 9,000 men would board the planes and gliders bound for the landing areas northwest of the city. Against this force, the Germans were expected to be able to field only a token force of garrison and replacement troops - certainly no match for the Red Devils. Unbeknownst to the British however, the II SS Panzer Corps was refitting in the immediate area. More than 7,000 soldiers of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions, equipped with tanks, artillery, and other heavy equipment, would respond to the British landing. The stage was set for one of the most epic struggles of World War II.

Bridge Too Far componentsThe Game
A BRIDGE TOO FAR includes: one four-color 23"x31" map sheet depicting the eastern area of Arnhem and the main road bridge; Chapter R of the ASL rule book which details the terrain in the city, special rules for the bridge, and rules for the A Bridge Too Far campaign games; more than 7 full countersheets which supply the counters necessary to play the campaign games; and nine new scenarios depicting the defining moments of the battle.

The core of A BRIDGE TOO FAR is its campaign games. Three separate campaign games cover all facets of the battle for the bridge. From the opening British moves to establish control of the area to the final German counterattacks to clear the British from the bridge, the entire struggle can be played out. Each calendar day can have as many as four campaign scenarios which are separated by a special phase called the Refit Phase (RePh). Refined from similar phases in RED BARRICADES, KAMPGRUPPE PEIPER, PEGASUS BRIDGE and BLOOD REEF: TARAWA, this phase allows the players to allocate new forces to the battle as well as reposition those which remain from the previous scenario. All of this action takes place on a stunning new map, meticulously researched and hand-painted by artist Don Petros.

The scenario list includes:
ABTF Scenario 1 The Prize
ABTF Scenario 2 Graebner's Folly
ABTF Scenario 3 Late For Mass
ABTF Scenario 4 First Threat
ABTF Scenario 5 Tigers to the Bridge!
ABTF Scenario 6 Just In Case
ABTF Scenario 7 Among the Bravest
ABTF Scenario 8 Please Hurry
ABTF Scenario 9 God Save the King
