RIVOLI, 1797 - Napoleon's Victory over the Austrians in Italy - continues SimTac's new series of Napoleonic battle games: BATTLES OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE EMPIRE. This series has been developed in response to the request of many aficionados for a classical, simple Napoleonic game at the battalion-level. For those wishing for an accurate simulation of tactical warfare in the Napoleonic Age, with two different set of rules which allow players to freely adjust the complexity level of the game, you need not look further. Many praise the series for its clean rules, professional presentation, and stunning art graphics.
The Campaign of Rivoli
On January 8, 1797, Austrian General Alvinczy launched a three-pronged attack on Bonaparte's Armée d'Italie. This was the fourth attempt to relieve the fortress of Mantua - the last major Austrian possession in Italy - which Bonaparte was besieging since June 1796. The main thrust consisting of 28,000 men marching down the Adige Valley from Trent was to fall upon Joubert's division at Rivoli, a key position barring the northern approach to Mantua. The two Austrian diversionary attacks, however, would fail to distract Bonaparte's attention from the main threat, and the French General at once began to concentrate troops to meet Alvinczy's Hauptarmee. When his concentration at Rivoli was complete, he would field 23,000 men and over 30 guns to engage the Austrians.Alvinczy, however, was intent on striking before Bonaparte could concentrate forces, and to that end he started out with the right wing of his army in order to overtake Joubert's covering force at La Corona. Marching through winding mule tracks and snow-covered mountain passes, the Austrian right wing consisting of over 15,000 men but destitute of cavalry and artillery support, succeeded in enveloping Joubert's division and reaching the Rivoli plateau on the evening of 13 January, following up the retreating French.
At dawn on the 14th, Bonaparte was at Rivoli with just 10,000 men and 12 guns, eagerly expecting the reinforcements he had called upon. Meanwhile, down in the Adige valley, he could see the Austrian left approaching to storm the Incanale pass, mount the Rivoli plateau, and rejoin Alvinczy with a strong cavalry and artillery force. RIVOLI, 1797 was now in full force.
