BITTER WOODS represents what could very well be (except for a scheduled ASL Gamette), the final foray into historical boardgame publishing by The Avalon Hill Game Company (due to the Hasbro buyout). This title couldn't be more fitting, as it covers one of those classic battle games that so many gaming enthusiasts have recreated since first becoming involved in the hobby (in large part by playing an AH game). I'm speaking, of course, of the Battle of the Bulge. While Avalon Hill released several Bulge titles, BITTER WOODS: THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE (pictured right) does appear to be their best single effort yet on initial inspection (although BULGE '81 Edition was an excellent game).
Game Designer Randy Heller conducted thorough research and thousands of hours of playtesting to make sure this Bulge game would be fiercly competitive. Historical research contributions were also made by Bruno Sinigaglio and renown Bulge expert, Danny Parker. BITTER WOODS recreates the critical first eleven days of this historical struggle (before the outcome became a foregone conclusion). Specific rules include: Mechanized Exploitation Movement, Bridge Demolition and Construction, Kampfgruppe Peiper Breakout, Skorzeny Infiltration, Random Events, Hidden Fuel Dumps, Reserves, Leader Units, Air Power and Artillery Support.

Players: TwoThis attractive package (map, counters pictured right) stands on its own merit and models that trademark "Play Me" look Avalon Hill became famous for. While one may pick up this title to add "yet another Bulge" game to their collection, this one will be bought because it represents one of the final game releases of The Avalon Hill Game Company. With BITTER WOODS, you may very well find yourself wishing you could ask Avalon Hill for more...if only AH had learned from the American spirit of this battle and told Hasbro that phrase every Bulge expert recalls - "Nuts."
