Operational and Strategic American Civil War Coverage Scores High Praise |
The Avalon Hill Game Company released two superb boardgame titles covering the American Civil War this summer. ON TO RICHMOND! covers the ACW on the operational level, and FOR THE PEOPLE is a strategic level game on the entire war. Both games are earning rave reviews and accolades in the marketplace, and represent recent efforts from the most-respected game designers in the industry. Furthermore, both titles include unparalled Web support to increase one's enjoyment. Such efforts are why learning that TAHGC has been acquired by Hasbro represents a significant blow to our industry. "The Hill" by and large did games "right" - and had an excellent distribution channel and storefront coverage.
Original release date: July 1998
ON TO RICHMOND! covers McClellan's 1862 Peninsula Campaign. The sixth in the GREAT CAMPAIGNS SERIES, it includes 8 new scenarios, including several hypothetical battles (like a Union attack at the gates of Richmond!). Includes historical scenarios like the Seven Days battle, Williamsburg, Eltham's Landing, and Seven Pines.
ON TO RICHMOND! is suitable for 2 or more players. The game includes:
Clear and concise rules manual, including historical perspectives, advanced rules, several scenarios, and designer's notes. You don't need to have played the other Great Campaigns games to jump right into this one. New advanced rules cover amphibious movement and gunboats. Two beautifully hand-painted maps of the areas around Richmond. High-quality components representing various Union and Confederate troops and units.
Fans of the Great Campaigns of the American Civil War series won't want to pass up the others in the series: STONEWALL JACKSON'S WAY, STONEWALL IN THE VALLEY, STONEWALL'S LAST BATTLE, HERE COME THE REBELS, and ROADS TO GETTYSBURG.
Fantastic Game Support
Ed Beach, co-designer of ON TO RICHMOND!, has been very proactive in responding to questions, and has run for some time now an impressive Web site supporting the entire game series.
Original release date: August 1998
FOR THE PEOPLE is a grand strategy game of the American Civil War covering the conflict from Texas to Pennsylvania, from the firing on Fort Sumter to the end at Appomattox Court House. You take the role of either Lincoln or Davis and command the armies, promote and relieve generals, conduct amphibious assaults, dispatch cavalry raids, and even battle incompetency and political intrigue among your own cabinet!
FOR THE PEOPLE uses a sophisticated new game system designed by Mark Herman. Detailed rules account for logistics, political warfare, and strategic will.
FOR THE PEOPLE includes a deck of strategy cards for conducting campaigns and incorporates the many events and personalities of the war. The Confederate player can build ironclads, naval mines, submarines, conduct overseas purchases and work towards foreign intervention. The Union player must build up his naval blockade, his ironclad fleet, fight draft riots, secure the Border States, and issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Relive the history of this time when our nation was torn asunder.
