| March 10, 1999 - Out of the Wrapper GAZALA Takes Over Where CRUSADER Left Off |
Following up on the heels of The Gamers' Standard Combat Series (SCS) release, CRUSADER, there was an outcry of sorts for a more detailed treatment of desert warfare. Many gaming enthusiasts found CRUSADER simply overly bland and simple and in need of more chrome rules. To answer this call, Dean Essig continues the series focus in the Mediterranean.
GAZALA represents this requested step up in complexity from CRUSADER. Those who are familiar with MiH's highly-acclaimed TRIUMPHANT FOX (sold out) will find GAZALA to be an exciting alternative for a less detailed, highly-playable game covering this battle.
A Step Up From CRUSADER
Initial comments from gamers is that GAZALA is definitely the
game CRUSADER should have and still can be. Some are hoping the
rules can be retrofited to the latter game title for a much needed
"chrome" boost. Of particular note that has caught gamers attention
are the Attack Supply System and Reserve Rules that add historical
flavor to the game. Some also find the Desert Navigation rules
to be helpful as unit movement rates are such that things can
unfold rather quickly on the battlefield. All in all, the initial
gamer comments coming in are that GAZALA definitely has the step
up on CRUSADER in terms of adding more detail and flavor to the
game. Game Designer, Dean Essig, has clearly answered the call
put forth by his loyal customers based on their CRUSADER game
experience. The question now only remains: "Will CRUSADER get
a needed rules system boost from GAZALA?" Stay tuned to the ConsimWorld Discussion Board and The Gamers Email Discussion Group to find out!
More About Gazala
At the end of May, 1942, Rommel faced the Commonwealth just west
of Tobruk. The Allied army had created the most extensive works
yet seen in the desert in an attempt to protect their exposed
positions. Rommel decided to hook around this line by moving deeply
into the desert. The result (a few weeks later) was the fall of
Tobruk into Axis hands for the first time since January, 1941
and the retreat of the Allied army into Egypt.
GAZALA uses a more detailed scale than CRUSADER and a greater
map area (2 maps) to allow more free-wheeling maneuver. The game
places more emphasis on supply than CRUSADER. Players move supply
units toward their forces to keep their operations running and
expend them to place formations into attack supply. To add more
planning to their operations and to allow some reaction to enemy
moves, a Reserve Mode is available.
