GRUNWALD 1410 Provides Insightful Look into the First Battle of Tannenberg

Command Magazine Issue No. 52

GRUNWALD 1410 is a two-player wargame covering the epic-fight between the Order of the Teutonic Knights and the allied forces of Poland and Lithuania, which resulted in the decisive defeat of the Germans. Though the Teutonic player starts with the initiative, during the course of battle both players will have the opportunity to both attack and defend.

This Command magazine Issue 52 game supplement carries two distinguishing and favorable characteristics; game design by the respected CSR Hall of Fame recipient, Ted Raicer (best known for his WWI game titles), and coverage of an obscure battle one would not expect to be covered in a professionally-produced, boxed game format. These pluses are counterbalanced by the uninspiring map graphics and counter art treatment, which at best only meets the design standards set in today's amateur DTP market.

The game system itself is standard XTR fare, with its straightforward game mechanics contained within the modest 9 pages of rules, allowing one to quickly pick up on the game system and complete an entire playthrough in one sitting. The game mechanics are what one would expect to find in a game covering this battle genre, featuring melee, disruption/rally, charges, etc.
