Work-in-Progress Report: RUSS0-JAPANESE WAR

as reported by Joe Keller, Avalanche Press

A lot of work went into Russo-Japanese War and I think you will all be pleased with the product. Finishing touches are being put on everything and it will go to press real soon. Of course everything I write is still subject to change until the Game is actually printed, but at the present here is what you get: a really big Operational map of Japan, Korea and parts of Russia and China. A Tactical Map. Basic Rules Book. Exclusive Rules and Scenarios Book. There are at present 10 Battle Scenarios, 12 Operational Scenarios, 3 Mini-Campaign Scenarios and 3 or 4 Campaign Games. Two Tactical Map overlays. And there is an 8.5" by 11" Round the World Map, and Logsheet. One full sheet of very beautiful counters and the Ship Data Sheets.

There is a Tactical Map overlay showing Port Arthur that lets the Japanese try to destroy Russian ships lying in the Roadstead, while suffering the concentrated fire of the Fort Guns. There is a Chemulpo overlay that lets the Russian try to run around the many islands to try to escape from the large Jap fleet bearing down on them.

The Battle Scenarios are mostly historical, allowing you to recreate or change history. The Operational Scenarios, in addition to covering the historical actions, throw in some alternative history what ifs.

The 3 Mini-Campaign Games are essentially Operational Games that have all the options thrown in. You can raid, bombard, lay and sweep mines, and go after the opposing fleets. But the most important thing for you to do is to protect your Transports and sink your opponent's. This is made more difficult, because the destinations and schedules of the Transport convoys are semi-randomly determined. You have many tasks for your ships to perform. And if you spread yourself too thin and lose all your Battleships you suffer instant death in the game.

The Campaign Games are not monsters. They are simple linkings of scenarios together that let you fight your way through the war. The Tactical Campaign Game links 7 Battle Scenarios together. The Operational Game links 5 Operational Scenarios together. The Strategic Campaign Game links the 3 Mini-Campaign Games together. In between scenarios, you get repair allotments for your ships. If you do poorly, your Order of Battle for the later scenarios suffers for it. If you do well, the final scenarios let you go beyond the end of the historical fleet actions. You have to decide when and how to use your resources, because sunk ships do not fight again.

There is at least one new rule in 1904 that I think everyone will like. Rule 7.301 Crippled Ships lets you separate heavily damaged ships from the group in the Tactical Battle. This means you can avoid the black hole syndrom that tends to swallow up all ships on the losing side in a Tactical Battle. And you can take those ships home to use your Repair points (in Campaign games) to get them back into action.

I guess I'm not allowed to talk about the other 4 GWAS games that we are working on, but the plan is to have 2 of them available at Origins in early July.

And another good reason to come to Origins in Columbus, OH. is that I will be running GWAS Volumes 1, 2 and 3 tournaments at Origins. Come and get in on some great GWAS gaming.
