STONNE 1940: The Battle for the Stonne Heights (Historical Advanced Squad Leader, HASL)Facing the threat of a collapsing front, the crisis facing the desperate French 2nd Army would be decided at the critical point at Stonne. If they could succeed and throw the Germans back across the Meuse, the enemy attack plan may well have failed. The German objective was to hold open the crucial Meuse crossings and seize the high ground at Stonne. Into this clash was drawn the Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland, with its artillery and the attached Stu.Pi.Btl. 43. This elite formation would soon face waves of French tanks, including the heavy B1 bis, in heretofore unseen numbers in this classic and historic struggle.
Small Unit Action...
STONNE, FRANCE, 15 May 1940: At 0630, the H39s of the 1ère compagnie du 45e B.C.C., commanded by Captain Petit, started from their position at the northeast of the Grandes-Armoises. Without support, they tried to "clean" the plateau in the direction of Stonne. At about 0730, they withdrew after losing two tanks. The heavy tanks of the 49e Bataillon followed, taking up positions at the southern limits at around 0930. Since no infantry followed, the Germans had time to infiltrate with infantry and AT guns and were soon asking for heavy support. Believing the 8th Panzer Regiment to still be with the Grossdeutschland, the 10th Panzer Division did not react. The B1 bis tanks re-entered Stonne, but suffered losses in the form of three tanks destroyed. A new counterattack was then launched with the elements of the 45e and 49e Bataillons, reinforced by a section of FCM tanks from the 2e Compagnie du 4e BCL and infantry. At 1030, the attack started. Despite the violence of the German return fire, tanks and infantry get into the village through the gardens. An epic fight took place between three puny PaK guns and some Renaults near the watertower. The gunners claimed three B1-bis destroyed for the loss of two AT guns. The French reported three H-39s immobilized by such fire. But gradually, the German withdrew, covered by fire from their StuG Company...
