Critical Hit's DRIVE TO THE BALTIC Adds New System to DTP Release

Drive to the Baltic CoverCritical Hit is taking an interesting approach with its upcoming Moments in History release, by taking a preexisting game (or titles in the preliminary design stage), and adapting them to the TURNING THE TABLES game system, designed by Dirk Blennemann. While this approach isn't particular unheard of, as The Gamers have long been known for soliciting game submittals based on their own brand of Series based games, it will be interesting to see the end result of this first release that is based on a DTP design published in Fall 1998.

The game in this case is the original Perry Moore design, ARMY GROUP NORTH. This represents an excellent selection, as Perry Moore Designs are known to cover interesting topics, but sometimes come up short in terms of game development and rules completeness. Critical Hit is combining two winning ingredients, an interesting historical topic backed by solid OoB research, and adapting the topic to an immanently playable game system.

DRIVE TO THE BALTIC! is an operational level simulation of the Soviet campaign to cut off German Heeresgruppe Nord from Heeresgruppe Mitte and the subsequent German counterattack, code named Operation Doppelkopf, to reopen a corridor to the beleaguered army group which took place in July and August 1944. The game is intended for two players, one taking each side, but is very well suited for solitaire play.

DRIVE TO THE BALTIC! uses the game system of the popular TURNING THE TABLES (Kharkov 1942), designed by Dirk Blennemann and also available from Moments in History. The players of this popular system demanded new games utilizing its strengths, including fog of war, overall excitement and fast play. Drive to the Baltic! is the answer.

Drive to the Baltic ComponentsThe game is played in game turns, each representing three days of real time. During a game turn a player moves and fights with his units and expends C3I Points. Both players have many opportunities to attack and defend, making for exciting and varied game play.

The Turning the Tables game system used in DRIVE TO THE BALTIC! is unique in its combination of easy to use mechanics and the depiction of fog of war. The system integrates various important aspects of combined arms warfare with a strong emphasis on uncertainty. The combination of Tactical Superiority determination, Random Events and Combat Chits make it possible to present a rather elaborate combat system with little ‘overhead’ in the form of complexity while allowing for the use of the system in solitaire play, including its fog of war features. Players will immediately notice that the combat system captures the flair of warfare on the Eastern Front and produces realistic, and exciting results, while remaining easy to learn and handle.
