Road to Cheren

New from Revolution Games. The Road to Cheren covers the Eritrea campaign in East Africa in 1941. The campaign featured British and French forces versus the Italians in a wild and mountainous country. Cheren is a game where the movement of each piece is critical. There is also a chit pull system to give both sides some special abilities and keep the enemy guessing as to what comes next. Finally some Italian native units may decide to join the Allies, or they may stay loyal, which creates extra tension in the game. Price: $21.

Blood & Sand Review

Patrick Baker @ Armchair General
In Blood & Sand, a game of WWII campaigns in North Africa, Richard Berg offers a system that replaces Combat Results Charts with “bucket o’ dice” rules in which each counter gets a varying amount of dice with which players try to roll to-hit numbers. Opportunity cards cover historical events such as the U.S. motorizing its infantry. The ArmchairGeneral.com review says it has high replay value and enough depth for experienced gamers while offering a good introductory gaming experience as well. [related story]

Mediterranean Fury

New from High Flying Dice Games. Mediterranean Fury: The Battle of Cape Matapan is a wargame simulation on the naval action that occurred near Crete during World War II. The game design is and highly playable, yet one that portrays the historical challenges facing the combatants. Goaded by their German Allies into taking some sort of action to disrupt the British reinforcements being rushed to Greece, and smarting from the humiliation of the British air raid a few months earlier at Taranto, the Italian fleet set sail on March 27, 1941. Italian Admiral Iachino sought to intercept the British reinforcement convoys east of Crete. Admiral Cunningham, alerted to the Italian fleet’s sortie, set sail to do battle. The resultant clash off of Greece’s Cape Matapan on the 28th would be the only time the Italian Navy challenged the English for control of the Middle Sea. It would also be the last time the Royal Navy would do battle on the high seas with an enemy fleet. Price: $13.95 (add $4 for mounted counters).

S&T #278: Tobruk 1941

image

New from Strategy & Tactics Press. Strategy & Tactics issue #278 which has been upgraded to a new 84 page perfect bound format and featuring the insert game, Tobruk 1941. Tobruk uses the same system as Sedan: The Decisive Battle for France, May 1940. Tobruk is a simulation of British Eighth Army’s Operation Crusader, the attempt to relieve the Tobruk garrison during the period from November to early December 1941, with each turn representing two days. The units in the game represent regiments (228 counters), and operate according to a chit-pull divisional-command activation system. Movement and combat are randomized by each division’s potential activation, such that the general course of play goes a long way toward simulating the fog of war in a simple yet realistic manner and without the need for special rules. As a new addition to this system (not present in Sedan), to simulate the more pronounced effect of long-range anti-tank guns in desert terrain, units with AT capability are identified, and they’re given the capability to engage enemy armor as it approach, just as the infamous 88s did at Hellfire Pass. Price: $30.
