The U.S. Civil War is a 2-player strategic war game of the American Civil War. The game covers the entire war from 1861 to 1865. Turns represent 3 months during the winter and 2 months during the summer — for a total of 5 turns per year. Each turn has 4 Action Phases when movement and combat occurs. There will be 4 scenarios included: The campaign game, 1861, 1862 and 1863. The U.S. Civil War on GMT Page: https://www.gmtgames.com/p-729-the-us-civil-war-2nd-printing.aspx CSW TUSCW

Will the updated special action card chart be posted above too, or should I just post it here? I will post it on BGG in any case later tonight.

Nick -- Did you get my e-mail earlier in the week with a scan of some more markups for the chart? Essentially, Mark decided to allow Naval Units to be activated by Theater Special Action Cards. Yes, you are allowed to pull your hair out! :-)

Jim, I see it now. That came in while I was sick as a dog the last few days. Changes made and new (final?) version should be in your inbox.

I presume S1.3 Special Rules "1861 Naval Ramp Up" and S1.4 Optional Rules apply to rule S4 "The Campaign Game" and not only to the 1861 Scenario. Yeah, yeah I see the "all the data" phrase etc. in S4 but who am I to judge the "obvious".

Thanks for all you do Jim.

Yes, S1.3 and Optional S1.4 apply to both the 1861 Scenario and the Campaign Game.

Post-New Living Rules Era

Just to set expectations going forward:

1. As Mark has noted in the header, all answers posted in this folder prior to the date of the New Living Rules are null and void. This is intended reduce confusion.

2. We are now going with the rules as written. We have had 5 or 6 months of checking Mark's intent. While this was important as this is an entirely new game and game system, it is time to move beyond doing so. This said, if something seems strange under the rules as written, it will go into my six month bucket for future consideration.

3. The bar for new errata has now been set higher. It now has to be more than simply a challenge to derive from the rules, it has to be not reasonably possible to derive it from the rules. This said, if certain items keep coming up, they will go into my six month bucket for future consideration. Also, I will no longer be posting rolling interim errata updates. While it was important to do that when a lot of errata was still coming up and there was quite a bit of confusion, we are now past that stage. This said, if anything gets over the errata bar in the next few months, we will at some point update the Q&A file in the header to include it.

4. All should feel free to continue to share their thoughts on play balance and historical feel. We are not going to change anything for six months, but we do want to hear what you have to say and it will influence what goes into my six month bucket for future consideration. However, please remember to be civil, realize you are not going to convince everyone of your point (especially immediately) and remember you don't have to keep repeating your argument once you have made your point.

5. The play balance and history questions have two parts. First, 1861, which has been explored quite a bit to date and has elicited a lot of comment. Second, 1862+ in the Campaign Game, which has not. There will also eventually be other parts to the question such as the 1862 and 1863 scenarios in isolation. At some point (maybe four months from now), I see potential value in possibly performing some playtesting to finally lock down 1861 so that it typically produces something roughly similar to the 1862 start. However, I am reluctant to proceed with anything of the sort until we better understand the 1862+ Campaign Game situation. So, I am kind of encouraging folks to try some Campaign Games with an 1862 start to see how that goes.

Just finished skimming the edits to the latest living rules. Man, you guys really put in work!

This is a much, MUCH tighter rule set than what came in the box (which was pretty good to begin with). Incredible job, gentlemen!

Is the "Attacking Across Rivers Chart 2b" in the header compatible with the 3/03/2016 rules set or does it need tweaking as well?

Well done, Mark, Jim, et al. Much appreciated. Thanks.

Is the staff game now going to use the new rules or reset and use the new rules or what?
