CSW Forum Boardgaming *INDIVIDUAL GAMES AND GAME SERIES Discussion Era: Contemporary Potential Conflicts DROPSHOT - Global War in the 1950's Costello - 09:42pm Sep 30, 2002 ESTTime to get goin'.Warplan Dropshot was drafted by the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff under Gen.
Omar Bradley in 1949. It was not the first plan for war with the Soviet
Union, but was the most sweeping in that it postulated strategy for nearly
a ten year period. The recommendations for improving the West's defenses
were sweeping and had a far reaching impact on the world, an impact that
lasts to this day. The game has two maps - a Strategic display of the Northern Hemisphere,
and a condensed map of Europe and the Meditterranean. Combat units
represent armies and corps and some specialized divisions, plus Tactical
air concentrations, bomber groups, fleets and submarines. The land game has adopted Kerry Anderson's system from MacArthur's War. The Strategic
Map allows play of nuclear offensives, biowar, commando ops and naval
strategy. Playtesters reported the game as both simple and fun to play. Warplan Dropshot - the '50's, a Charles S. Roberts Origins Award Nominee a few years back. Also a nominee for the International Gaming Association. GO TO POST 466 FOR BERLIN '48 SCENARIO

This is a solo AAR of the later 50's scenario, played in 2009. To be poted as quickly as I get around to formatting the posts and matching the photos. As usual, get the full resolution image by right clicking to select "view image", or looking at the link at the end. Jan/Feb: The Commandos, sabotage, and biowar attacks fail completely and cause
no damage. The US has sufficient advance warning (DR 3) to disperse
two of the B-52 wings, leaving only two vulnerable (and one protected
by Interceptors). Missiles: Nuclear damage markers are placed in Alaska (destroying a
B47), 1006 - the European industrial complex, and the UK (destroying a
B47 and INT). This is followed by waves of Soviet bombers. The
Tu-95s swarm out over the Eastern Seaboard, a My-4 wing goes after the
B-36s in Nevada (?) and Tu-16s after B-47s in North Dakota. My-4s also
raid the B-47 bases in the Philippines as well as delivering another
blow to southern England Tu-16s attack B-47 bases in Iceland, Spain,
and Turkey. Damage results: Philippines-D1, ND-abort, Nev-loss,
Washington(INT:5->4)-D1[destroys INT,NCA], NY(4)-D1[destroys B-52],
Iceland-abort, Spain-D2[destroys B47], Turkey-D2[destroys B-47],
London-abort. Overall 6 bombers, 2 INT lost. The Soviet fleets and submarines are at sea, going after resource
hexes and in the case of the Baltic fleet, threatening Denmark from
the east.

NATO strategic counterstrike: Three B-47 wings attack the Far east
districts of the Soviet Union. B-52 supported by B-29s from Scotland
attack the western districts, B-36s attack the bases near the Finnish
border, and B-52s strike Moscow (reinforced by B-36s), and the
industry in and beyond the Urals. The KC-50s operate near the polar
circle to enable the B-47s from Iceland to reach Siberia. B-47s from
North Africa strike Kiev, and from Greece strike Rostov. Soviet air defenses turn out to be strong. Damage results: Kamtchatka(6->5)-D2[destroys Tu16],
Irkutsk(0505,6->5)-D2[destroys My-4], Omsk(0605,3->2)-abort, N
Urals(0705,2->1)-D1, Kola(2->1)-loss+abort[B36 destr],
Moscow(0803,4->3->2INT)-D2[destroys INT,NCA],
Minsk(1->0->-1INT)-loss[B29 destr], Kiev(1->0->-1INT)-loss+abort[B47
destr], Rostov(1->0)-loss+abort[B47destr]. The USSR has reached destruction level 7, but at the cost of US 4 bomber
wings, 2/5 of the force employed. NATO fleets converge on the Soviet Fleets. 7th and 5th Fleet converge
on the Pacific Fleet, forcing it to return to Vladivostok
(DR1->3). 6th Fleet exits the Mediterranean to help the Royal Navy
against the Northern Fleet (destroying it) while 2nd and 3rd Fleet
fight the submarine menace. State at the end of the strategic phase: US 3 NDM, USSR 7 NDM, W
Europe 4, Turkey 2, Philippines 1.

Strategic Land Operations. 3 airborne units are in damaged hexes and
cannot air assault. 2 land in Denmark, one in Frankfurt; the latter
is eliminated by rear area security forces. The Soviets take the
Iranian oil point. Two Soviet armies stream through the Fulda Gap, overrunning the German
corps situated there. The Germans are forced back to Frankfurt. A Soviet and two Czech armies move into Bavaria. An overrun by two
other armies against the US corps on the wooded border fails
(3:2->1:1,DR3). The Soviet Marines move into Denmark. NATO uses tactical nuclear weapons in central Germany to eliminate the
Soviet breakthrough towards Frankfurt (which succeeds - DR6), and
against the Soviet buildup that failed to overrun the US from the Harz
mountains (again a 6). The Soviets use their tactical nuke against
the UK corps south of Hamburg, but to no effect. The NATO player can
only use 4 TAC units, and deploys 3 which aid the French defense of
Munich and the US near the Harz. The Soviet 3:1 attack across the Danube against the area around Munich
is reduced to 3:2 by the TAC units. DR6->3:EX eliminates the French
and one Czech. A Soviet and two Yugoslav armies attack Milan 3:2 but
have to retreat, DR4->2. The 4:1 against the US unit in the forests on the border is reduced to
3:1 by TAC, DR3->2-EX, the Americans are eliminated at the cost of a
Soviet Mech army. The Belgians in Hamburg are not attacked at 2:1 to
avoid the retreat for the units in Denmark. A 3:1 against European
Turkey by three Russian, Romanian, and Bulgarian armies forces a
Turkish retreat against the Bosporus, eliminating the Turks.
|
|
| |
|
|
|
The Soviets pay an Oil Point to move again. A 3:2-2 attack against Frankfurt (1/3 chance of success) is beaten
back by the West Germans with the Soviets retreating and regrouping in
Bavaria. The 3:1->3:2-1 attack against the US in central Germany,
defended with the final TAC air unit, forces the US to fall back to
the Ruhr area. A 28:5-1 attack against the BAOR eliminates the British
and cuts off the Belgians in Hamburg, the last NATO held hex in West
Germany's eastern half. The second Milan attack (DR5->3) eliminates
the Italians and Milan falls, opening a route for the Russians to
southern France. A 9:4 attack against Thessaloniki eliminates a Greek
corps at the cost of a Romanian and Bulgarian army. In the NATO land operations phase, the French corps from Algeria is
landed in Genoa to block the entry to France. Two US corps are
transferred to the Gulf of Mexico to prepare shipping to Europe. With
the VIII ports destroyed, the Turks concentrate their units in
Istanbul. The Spaniards start building a defensive line along the
Rhone. The Italian Mech corps in Rome marches northward and attacks
the Yugoslavs defending the Russian supply line (Italy will surrender
since Milan has fallen, so they might as well try something). The 2:1
(DR4-EX) sees both sides eliminated. Deadpiles: Italy and Denmark surrender. The Netherlands Collapse (D1,DR4), and
there is unrest in West Germany (D1,DR3), Belgium (D1,DR2), and France
(D1, DR6). Spain, hard hit by the Soviet base attacks, collapses (D2,
DR3), and there is unrest in Turkey (D2,DR2). Fortunately the
Bosporus remains closed for another month at least (but probably not
longer than that, Turkish collapse appears imminent). Finally, on the
NATO side unrest develops in the UK (D1,DR5), but not yet in the US
(D3,DR2), where the media are telling people the war is being
won. There is unrest in Greece (D0,DR4), but Japan remains so far
unaffected (D0,DR2). On the Soviet side, no nuclear damage has been done except to the
Soviet Union, but there is Unrest in East Germany (DR4), Poland (DR3),
and a revolt in Yugoslavia (DR6), while nothing happens in
Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania (all DR1!), and Bulgaria (DR4). The
surviving Yugoslavian units in Milan and Munich slip to the West,
joining the French in each case, while the unit in Belgrade disbands
(DR3)! The USSR, however, holds (D7,DR2). Random Event (35): The PRC enters the war on the Soviet side and
captures Formosa. Submarine combat: 2nd and 3rd Fleet suffer damage (DRs 2,3 need to
return to port!). Soviet subs run wild in the Atlantic. However, they
can't hit anything (DR6, 6). They do hit the IND point in the Pacific
(DR1). Force construction: US 6 IND (5 due to NCA destr), 2 Oil. EU 2 IND. Builds Motorized Corps (2), UK Mech Corps (3), B-52 (2). USSR 5 IND (4 due to NCA destr), 4 Oil. Builds Mech Army (3), Cavalry
Army (1). The US removes 1 NDM (in Alaska), so does Spain (but too late) and
Turkey (looks a bit better now). The USSR removes one.

March/April 1957: The weather is CLEAR. (DR1). There is no unconventional
warfare for the USSR, but the US manages to activate the PSYOPS marker
against the USSR (DR 2). The Baltic and Pacific Fleets put to sea again. The Soviets have only 3 nuclear attacks; the My-4's go after the
Nevada B-52s (but are shot down - DR1), the Tu-95s are sent against
B-36s near the Great Lakes (which they destroy- DR6 - D2), and B-47s
in Scotland (destroyed - DR 6- D2). The UK's prospects are bleak now
(NDM level 3, while the US now has level 4). The Tu-16s are sent on a
conventional raid against European industry (to no effect). The Baltic Fleet is destroyed in its attack on the US and RN fleets
(DR1). The Pacific Fleet merely is sent back to port.
The NATO fleets can now concentrate on chasing submarines.

US operational bomber units are down to three B-52 wings and two B-47 wings. The
B-52s attack Siberia (the remaining Tu-95 base, which they destroy,
DR-3->2->1INT-D1[Tu95 destroyed]), Kola (industry which is only
dented, DR2->1, D1), Kiev (industry and the other Tu-95, again the
industry is only damaged, but the bomber is gone,DR5->4->3INT[Tu95
destr]), while the B-47s go for the Romanian oilfields (they cannot
reach the Caspian or Iranian ones) and vaporise them (DR6->5-D3). Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are now at NDM level 3, and the USSR at 10. I thought this round had in all likelihood decided the war, since the USSR now
cannot reach the continental US with the loss of its Tu-95s, while the
B-52s will continue to inflict serious damage. Fortunately for the
US, none were lost to INTs this turn.

In the Land operations phase, even without the Yugoslavians, the
Soviets again traverse the Black Forest and are ready to try and cross
the Rhine in South Germany into eastern France. An overrun attempt
against Frankfurt from the NE (9:6,3:2-DR5->3-EX) eliminates the West
German corps for the expensive price of a tank army. The Americans in
the Ruhr are to strong to risk an overrun. The attack across the Rhine is stalled by using tactical nukes that
put the units out of supply (12:3->6:3TN->2:1->1:1TAC->1:2Forest,
DR3->2-AR) and force them to fall back on Munich again. The attack
against the Ruhr (11:6->3:2->1:1TAC,DR1->-1-AE) is a total disaster,
resulting in the destruction of a Soviet tank army, the East German
army, and a Czech motorized army without budging the
defenders. Unfortunately their position has become untenable by the
defeats around Strasbourg and Frankfurt. Ralph Peters would be proud! The attack against Hamburg (28:3->7:1->4:1TAC) uses the max number of
NATO TAC units, but the odds are hopeless, and the Belgians are
destroyed (DR6->4-DE). The Soviets pay their Oil Point (now down to 4) to move again. A 2:1
overrun against the Ruhr (14:6->2:1,DR5->3-EX) eliminates the
Americans and the Soviets cross the Rhine into Belgium, outflanking
the French. The following Russian wave occupies Rotterdam, ready to
attack the Brussels garrison, while reinforcements sweep into West
Germany. In the South, units collect around Athens but are not strong
enough to attack. The Battle of Brussels is epic, with the garrison
destroying a Russian motorised army before succumbing (8:1, DR2->0,EX). The renewed attack on Strasbourg (28:1) is an inevitable success so
the US do not use their remaining TAC units. The French are eliminated
(DR6), and seven Communist armies stand west of the Rhine (one of them
Czech, one Polish). The Americans send three arriving corps and a Marine division into
France, trying to stem the tide. But bad luck stays with them, as they
lose one corps immediately retaking Brussels (2:1->4:1TAC,DR2->0-EX). End Phase:
West Germany collapsed (DR6->7) but is completely in Soviet hands
already anyway. Unrest arises in France, and Belgium collapses
(DR4->5). Greece remains at unrest, but Turkey unfortunately collapses
(DR4->5). The way to sea is open for the Black Sea Fleet. Unrest
arises in Japan (DR6). Finally, on a DR of 4, the UK collapses (it had
a 50% chance of going on). After the fallout wafting over from Romania, Bulgaria merely slips
into Unrest (DR3), and so does Romania itself (DR1- ?!). Hungary
collapses, but has no units on the Russian side. Czechoslovakia slips into Unrest (DR4), nothing happens in East
Germany (DR2->3), but Poland collapses (DR6->7). The mass desertion
of Polish soldiers (with 3 armies standing at the Rhine) does weaken
the Soviets. The US slips into Unrest (DR4->5) but not much will happen unless the
Soviets manage to strike again. The Soviet Union falls into Unrest
(DR4->5PSYOPS->4UK). Amusingly, Yugoslavia declares itself a NATO ally (event 63). (All
the Soviets have to do now though is to put a unit into Belgrade to
keep the country out of the war, but now Belgrade has a garrison!) The subs in the Pacific are chased back to Vladivostok by the 5th and
7th Fleet (DR3->4, Defender returns). A sub is sunk in the south
Atlantic by the 3rd Fleet (DR6), and the 3 subs in the North Atlantic
are sent back to Kola by the 6th and 2nd Fleets (DR4->5). However, the
remaining sub in the S Atlantic manages to remove 1 Oil Point! (DR2) Construction Phase. US 7 IND, 2->1 Oil. Builds 1 Mech corps, 1 Motor corps, 1 B-36. Damage removal: 1 (Boston). Also: 1 Spain (too late), 1 Philippines. USSR 5 IND, 3 Oil. WP: 1 IND. Build 2 Tu-95. Damage removal: 3 in USSR (now 7), 1 in Romania.

From here on, there is slightly less detail as the pace of operations slows down, especially due to the depletion of strategic forces. May/June 1957: Weather: Clear. 2 Tu-16 attack North African B-47 bases (DR5->4-D1[destroys B-47]). 1
nuke converted to Tac Nuke. Pacific Fleet & Black Sea Fleet sail. Pacific Fleet attacks 7th Fleet,
must return to port. Submarines sail. Only 1 reinforcement: 1 TAC. NATO strategic phase: Only 5 attack factors, therefore only 1 B-52,
attacking Minsk. DR6->5->4INT,D3[IND destroyed,Tu-16 destroyed]. USSR
is back to NDM 10. Two airborne divisions land SW of Paris. The Soviets advance into France
to attack the flank of the NATO Dijon position, tac nukes are dropped E of Paris, two
armies destroyed (DR6). An attack on Brussels fails
(23:7->3:1->3:2TAC,DR4->2-AR), as does an attack on Paris,
2:1->1:2TAC,DR4->2-AR) and one on Dijon
(11:9->1:3TAC->1:2TAC->1:3Forest,DR4-AR). The Soviets also lose 1 army attacking the
Belgrade garrison (EX). 2nd Movement: Attack on Brussels (26:7->3:1->2:1TAC,DR2->0-AR) fails again!
Attack on Paris (2:1,DR5->3-EX) succeeds as Paris falls to the surviving
airborne in a bloody battle. Attack on Dijon (11:9->1:1Forest,DR6-EX) sees a US & French corps
eliminated, 2 Soviet and one CZ army. Belgrade & Brussels save the game for NATO! Nato land phase: French & YU motorized corps move up from Nice, attack
Paris. A 2nd Yugoslav unit also attacks Paris. US moves Marines from London to
France, airborne from US to London, NG from Gulf to France. Attack on
Paris (4:1, DR2->0-EX) clears the city. The Front still holds against the Soviets. 2nd Phase: Reforming of front along Rhine in N, Nice in S. France remains in Unrest. US (now at 3) remains in Unrest. No further collapses in the East either (RO, BU again 1,2!). USSR
narrowly avoids Revolt (DR4->5). All Soviet subs (Pacific, N, S Atl) are sent home. Random Event: 41 (PRC again). Force construction: US 7 IND, 2 Oil. Builds 2 NG Mech, 2 NG Motor, 1 B-36. Damage removal: 1 (Great Lakes), US now at 2. 1 (Scotland), 1
(GE/Be/NE). 1 (North Africa). 1 Turkey. USSR 4 IND, 3 Oil. WP: 1 IND. Build 1 My-4, 1 Motor army. Damage removal: -.

July/August 1957. Weather: Clear (auto). 2xTu-16 bomb France (Port #3). DR1-Loss. One lost. Soviets now have
a single bomber left. Black Sea Fleet reaches Atlantic, Pacific Fleet
attacks Americans, destroys 7th Fleet (!). NATO strategic: 6 Nuclear bomb factors - B-52 attacks Caspian
oilfields from Azores (DR2->1,D1), B47 attacks Kiev industry
(DR4->2,Abort). USSR now at 11. Conventional: B-52 on Ural (no
effect), B-52 on WP IND (out of action). 2/3/6th Fleet attack Black Sea Fleet, send it into Kronstadt for
repairs (DR2->5-Defender return). 5th Fleet destroys Pacific Fleet. 2 Russian reinforcements come in, plus 2 units from strategic map. Tac nuke dropped on Ardennes defensive position. DR5-Marines elim.
NATO puts a Tac nuke on the Ruhr, no kill but placed. Attack on Ardennes:
26:5->4:1Forest->2:1TAC->3:1TAC. 2nd Movement Phase: Overrun on Brussels, DR6. Attack on Belgrade,
DR3-DE. Attack on NG in Dijon: 12:4-3:1->2:1Forest->3:2TAC,DR1->0,AR.
Attack on Paris: Max, DR1-EX-Motorised army lost. Paris falls. NG in
Dijon OOS, Athens is only NATO city still standing on the continent! NATO: PSYOPS is back->USSR. Motorized Corps in US, transported to Normandy, moves on
Paris. Airborne lands in Portugal, moves to Madrid. Counterattack on Paris fails
(9:5-1:1->2:1TAC,DR2->0,AR). No 2nd attack. Greece, US, FR remain in Unrest. East Germany remains in Unrest, CZ collapses!
(DR6->7) But has no units left on map. RO, BU still only remain in Unrest
(DR1,2). USSR suffers no PSYOPS effect, but revolts break out! (DR4). Submarines: not attacked. N Atl submarines hit IND. Random event: 65 - Yugoslavia -already happened. Force construction: US 7 IND (-1 subs), 2 Oil. Build Mech corps (3), 2xB-47 (4). !!! Damage: removes 1 at Great Lakes, 2xEngland. USSR 4 IND, 2 Oil. WP 1 IND (conventional bombing). Builds Tank army
(3), rifle army (1). Oil at 3! Damage: USSR removes 2, now at 9.

September/October 1957: Weather: clear. Only one Soviet bomber, Tu-16, attacks ports in Greece, but aborts
(DR2). The Black Sea fleet sails from Riga, attacks 3 US Fleets and sinks the 6th
Fleet. US: B-52s attack IND in Urals, Oil in Iran (conventional). A B-47 wing goes
up against WP IND (conventional). The conventional attacks succeed
(DR4,6), the nuclear attack is shot down (DR1->0). The 2nd and 3rd Fleet destroy the Black Sea Fleet in the Bay of Biscay
(DR4->6). The Soviets attack the US Corps W of Paris and the one locked in (but in
supply due to the Yugoslavs SW of it!) near Dijon. The Soviet Tac nuke
attack fizzles, but the NATO tac nuke attack eliminates a motorized
army N of Dijon (Sedan?) and halves the Russian 8-5. The attack W of
Paris is beaten back (9:4->3:2TAC,DR2->AR). The big attack at Dijon (21:4->3:1TAC->2:1Forest,DR3->2-EX) eliminates the US corps and a Soviet Mech corps. Meanwhile, several Soviet armies are marching through the mountains to
attack Athens. 2nd Phase: Overrun of the Yugoslavs 14:2->6:1,DE, then pincer attack
on the US Corps, 10:1-DE. Russians down to 1 Oil! NATO Land Phase: 3 corps arrive as reinforcements in US, 2 shipped to Normandy, one to
Athens. A Marine Div is shipped to Portugal, moves to Madrid. The
Marines in Madrid move to the Pyrenees, joined by the French corps
that blocked the defile at Nice. The Romanians and Bulgarians collapse, leaving the siege of Athens
fairly weak for the moment. The revolt in the USSR is beaten down
though. Construction Phase US 7 IND 2 Oil Builds 1 Tank Corps (3), 1 Marine Div (2), 1 B-52 (2). USSR 4 IND 2 Oil Builds (what?) Random event: 35- PRC again

November/December 1957: Weather: Snow. The Soviets' remaining Tu-16 wing narrowly fails to place a nuclear hit on
Greece, where NATO has now stationed an interceptor. There are now 4
nuclear attack factors stockpiled for lack of delivery platforms. The
Pacific submarines sail again. NATO is back to 6 nuclear weapon points, so the B-52's strike Kiev (which
already has 1 NDM) in the hope of finally knocking out the industry
there, despite the location's fighter protection. The B-47s from
Iceland strike Omsk. The other remaining B-52 wing strikes the
Iranian oilfields. Overall however NATO command is increasingly
despondent about its ability to bomb the USSR into submission. Indeed
the strike on Minsk is a failure and the B-52s are lost
(DR2->0,loss). At least, next month, 2 B-50s will be out of mothballs
as a temporary, more short ranged replacement. The strike on Omsk
gains a D1 (DR4->3). USSR now at 7 NDM. The conventional strike
takes out oilfield production for the month, leaving the Soviets again
at 2 total production. With the last surface threat finally gone, the
2nd and 3rd Fleet concentrate on submarine hunting, as does the 5th in
the Pacific. The Soviets belatedly realise that they have left themselves
vulnerable to landings in the Channel ports and move to block the
coast. This weakens their spearheads somewhat but they still attempt
a massive attack on the two US corps guarding the Normandy ports. More
unpleasantly, Rome is unguarded, and the garrison of Budapest can now
be moved to Rome anyway. There is no way to guard all cities against
NATO airborne landings, but the big port cities should be protected
because they make it too easy for NATO to come back. The Soviets
realise that thay have to build a lot of rifle armies to garrison
conquered cities. Given that they also have to keep up their front
line strength, that will take a bit. In Greece, the Soviets barely achieve parity, they will wait
for a nuclear strike to knock Greece out of the game. The Soviets finally use tactical nukes with resounding success,
and the two US corps in Normandy are eliminated. The US tactical nukes
fail to eliminate a unit although they prevent a quick Soviet relocation to
the Pyrenees where the next line of defense is being built. Only two armies turn up there as a blocking force. The Soviets
use their last Oil Point for an Admin move to get a unit from
Minsk to Warsaw to get the industry there operating again. On the NATO side, finally, the two B-50 wings arrive, as do 3 new
mechanised corps (2 of them the belatedly mobilised NG). Two are moved
into Spain, one into Athens. The forces in Spain are strong enough to
allow a counterattack (11:5->3:1TAC,DR6-DE) that destroys a Soviet
Mech army near Toulouse, before the NATO forces fall back to the
Pyrenees. An attack out of the Athens position is decided against. Greece remains in unrest, and so does France (there is no prospect of
its surrendering at this point until the Soviets manage to plan some
NDMs there). Likewise, East Germany and the USSR remain in unrest but with no
danger of collapse. The PSYOPS attempt in the USSR fizzles (DR4). USSR 6 IND (with the garrisoning of Warsaw, the WP IND has been
regained, and the Western European IND is now controlled) 2
Oil. Soviets now down to 1 Oil Point. Build: 3 Motorized armies. Damage: The USSR drops to 3 NDM. The US fleets destroy a sub in the North Atlantic (DR5->6, the
remaining sub still manages to interdict the Merchant IND, DR2)
and the Pacific (DR6). Four Russian subs remain on the map. US: 7 IND->6, 2 Oil. Build 2 Armored Corps (6). 8 Oil Points. The US
removes its last NDM. One year of war is over. Deadpile on the track; below are units of surrendered nations.
