Hi everyone!

I hope that you're all off to a good start in 2019!

For us here at GMT, the New Year started off busy, as we were in the midst of shipping out the new Deluxe Edition of Paths of Glory. Then our office and warehouse folks barely had time to come up for air before they were shipping the new printing of SPQR Deluxe, and the new release Panzer: Expansion 4: France 1940. We are wrapping up those shipments this week, and getting ready to start shipping five more items this coming Friday, January 25th. So it's been wall-to-wall busy for us so far this year, but we are not complaining. Busy means jobs for our employees. Busy means loyal customers get cool games to enjoy. Busy means royalties and the joy of seeing their creations in the hands of players for designers. Busy means more opportunities for our teams to learn and grow, honing their skills at their crafts. Busy is good! So I want to say "Thank You" to all of you who buy and enjoy our games for helping us stay engaged, improving, and busy!

PoG Card Update Coming Next Month. For you new owners of the Deluxe Edition of Paths of Glory, note that we'll be sending you an 8-card update kit sometime in mid-February. Please see the "News You Can Use" section, below, for details.

Harold Buchanan's Latest "Harold on Games" Podcast Interview - with ME. I rarely do interviews, but Harold does such a classy job with his Harold on Games Interviews that I couldn't say no when he asked me if I'd sit down with him at this past Fall's Weekend at the Warehouse. Harold has a unique way of framing his interviews. Ours started over scrambled eggs and informal breakfast conversation, included some real-time exchanges with designers and friends on the floor of the Weekend's gaming area, and concluded with some really good questions in the studio about the work I do and the motivations I have for how I do that work at GMT.

Harold is releasing the interview in two parts. Here's a link to Part 1. I like how it turned out (to be fair, my mom thought it was riveting and my wife fell asleep about half way through, so YMMV!), so I hope you'll find it an interesting listen. Stay tuned to Harold's social media channels for a heads-up on when (I think it should be up in a week or two) Part 2 will go live.

Lunchtime Games Expanded. When I set up the "Lunchtime Games" department on our site, something that is only loosely a "series," it was driven by Mark Herman's excellent 2-player Card-Driven Game (CDG), Fort Sumter. I was thinking that "series" would encompass Fort Sumter and all 20-60 minute CDGs to follow. But several customers and designers have asked me over the past months why I would limit the series to CDGs. Why not just put any of our strategy games that you can play in that timeframe into that department to help our customers who like short but challenging strategy games easily find those games in our line and on our website?

That question/argument makes sense to me. So, from here on, we are not going to limit the Lunchtime series to CDGs. Beginning with Volko's Hunt for Blackbeard, a tense strategy game that plays in 30-45 minutes, I'll start adding non-CDG strategy games that fit the time requirement to this series as well. I just want to let you all know in advance, so you don't think that every game in the Lunchtime Games series will use the same systems.

------------------
Systems Progress. I think "We're not yet where we want to be, but thank goodness we're not where we used to be" just about covers our systems progress over the past 6-9 months. We have made incremental improvements throughout, and everything is now working SO much better than it did 9 months ago. But there are still some areas that we want to improve. A few areas to note:

Website.
1. We are still not getting auto-notification emails for USPS packages, but the shipping info (including tracking #) IS now showing up in your MY ACCOUNT area on the website when a game ships. So for now, check there. And if you need auto-notifications, while ours are still a work in progress, please remember that there is a free USPS service you can sign up for that will allow you to preview and manage any deliveries coming to your home. It's called Informed Delivery. Just click on the link to go to the sign up page that has more info.

2. We've just added PayPal functionality for all non-P500 orders. We can't (yet, and maybe not ever) use it for P500 orders due to PayPal's policies on time between ordering and fulfillment. W will continue to talk with them about ways to address or get around this, but for now, at least you can use PayPal for non-P500 orders. See the "News You Can Use" section for more details.

3. We've upgraded the site so that now when you change your address, that new address will populate to all of your outstanding P500 orders. This has been a nagging problem for a long time, and should take care of some of those frustrating situations where part of our system (the order database) kept an old address on file long after you'd given us a change of address.

4. Wish Lists are now enabled on our website. See the "News You Can Use" section for details.

5. Our % of declined cards on our P500 Auto-charges has decreased from over 30% in early December to now about 10%, mostly due to us getting the word out and our customers updating their CC field on our site. We are going to be continuing our work to improve the Auto charge and Recharge process as we move forward, but overall, it's working much better now.

Email Issues. Mitch has been carefully monitoring our office email issues, both inbound and outbound. It looks now like our email is flowing smoothly, even to/from overseas customers!

I know this doesn't make the frustration of the past months any better, and I apologize to any of you who have experienced non-response from us. It's been a frustrating situation all around, and I appreciate, despite your frustrations, that you have been in the main very courteous and kind to our office folks as they've tried to work through and around our systems problems.

So, if you have an unresolved issue with an order, if you can't use our chat function (which is still the BEST way to resolve issues quickly with our office) please drop an email to gmtoffice@gmtgames.com or use the contact form on our website. And if you don't get a response within 24-48 hours, please let Mitch know at webmaster@gmtgames.com so he can track the emails and figure out why it didn't come through. Thanks for your patience as we continue to monitor this to make sure it's working correctly now.

Game Sites and Online Tournaments. I love that so many of our games garner long-term gamer popularity and support. In terms of sales for us, these games have "legs" - they sell well year after year. And it's very important for us to have many games that sell well over long periods so we don't have worry about the "publish or perish" problem - having to churn out new games constantly or die.

But it's great from the customer side, as well, to have games that garner so much support over time that communities sprout up around them. It's great to see online forums and sometimes even whole websites (like Lee's Wingleader site, the Panzer Pusher site, or those great sites for Commands & Colors Ancients and C&C Napoleonics), often with tons of player-created content devoted to our games! And it's nice to have tournament communities where lots of players can play their favorite games online year-round.

This time, I want to highlight and make you aware of a couple of online tournaments for two of our long-time best-selling games, Paths of Glory and Combat Commander.

I hope you guys enjoy these sites and tournaments!

That's it from me for this time. I hope you enjoy the rest of this update. Thanks, as always, for your support! - Gene

Today's New P500 Additions
(Click on box image to go to P500 page for more info and to order.)

Battle Line, Medieval Edition           No Retreat: North Africa,              No Retreat, North Africa
(New on P500)                     3rd Edition (P500 Reprint)                 Update Kit (P500)

New P500 Additions. We have one new P500 addition this month, as well as a reprint and an update kit. Note that you are definitely seeing a bit of a slowdown of new additions over the past couple months, as our new standards for adding games to the P500 list (ready for art within 3-9 months, as detailed in my December Update) take effect. Looking at my P500 addition outlook list, though, we should start seeing significant new additions in February and on through the spring.

Battle Line, Medieval-Themed Edition
Now in it's 8th GMT Printing,  designer Reiner Knizia's  Battle Line is our #2 All-time best-selling game! This new re-themed version of Battle Line is a two-player strategy card game built around the theme of Medieval warfare. This re-themed version of Battle Line features 60 beautiful new cards by illustrator Roland MacDonald, as well as 10 full-color tactics "wildcards" that give players extra flexibility and choices and help make each new battle wildly different from the last.

------------
New P500 Reprint Additions. We are adding one new P500 Reprint to our list this time.

Designer Carl Paradis' No Retreat series continues to sell well and be very popular with our customers. We are out of stock again on No Retreat: The North African Front, so it's time to start planning for a 3rd printing. If you'd like to see what all the No Retreat fun is about, just click the box below for more info and to order.

Carl wanted to make some additions and enhancements in the 3rd Edition of No Retreat: North Africa. We are going to make an update kit available for owners of the previous 1st and 2nd printings to get the new components and information without having to buy a new game. Just click on the box below to get the details and to order.

------------

Here's a brief tease as to what we have lining up for P500 addition in the coming months. Note that this is not a comprehensive list, so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. And my previous November hints of "A new edition of our 2nd all-time best-seller, with a new Theme and all new art" and "An expanded reprint edition of one of the No Retreat titles" referred to this month's new Battle Line: Medieval and No Retreat: North Africa 3rd Edition additions, respectively. Over the coming several months, I anticipate that we will add to P500:
  • A new game from Mark Simonitch
  • A new Lunchtime series game
  • A new Commands & Colors expansion
  • A cool multi-player strategy game with a similar theme to "Source of the Nile"
  • A multi-pack ACW game (several battles), the first of a series.

PayPal Enabled on our Website Started Yesterday for non-P500 orders.  As of 22 Jan 2018 (yesterday), we began accepting payments using PayPal. This will show as another payment option when you check out. This payment option will not be shown if you have any P500 games in your cart at the time of payment. [Paypal has restrictions that prevent us from using this option for P500 orders at this time. Hopefully, that will change at some point, but for now, it's for non-P500 orders only. - GB]

------------
Wish Lists Enabled on our Website. We have recently enabled the Wish List functionality on the site. This allows you, on each product page, to save the item to your wish list for later purchase. The list will show under “My Account” on the “Wish List” tab. From there you can easily find the items and purchase them when you’re ready.

Final Stage Playtesters Needed for Clash of Sovereigns.  Clash of Sovereigns is ourupcoming 2-4 player CDG on the War of the Austrian Succession, designed by Bob Kalinowski (Clash of Monarchs, Prussia's Glory I and II) and developed by Kevin Boylan. It is in the final stages of playtest, and will be added to the P500 list very soon.  The last few months of test and development have seen Rules reorganization and tightening, Card Deck fine tuning, enhanced Fleet operations rules, and several juicy but optional "chrome" rules additions.  We've had victories for both the Pragmatic and Bourbon alliances, and players on both sides have come within a VP or two of Automatic Victory in early/mid game.  One recent playtester comment -- "By the way, did I forget to tell you that this game ROCKS?"  :-)

The team can use a final group of playtesters to dive into this almost finished design, to further sound out and tune Victory Point levels and victory conditions for both the campaign game and shorter Late War (1746-8) scenarios.  You can try your luck with Louis XV and Marshal De Saxe as the French player, Frederick and Gages as the Prussian/Spanish player, Maria Theresa and Marshal Traun for the Austrians, or George II/Charles of Turin and Cumberland/Legonier as the British/Piedmont player.  If interested in 2 or 4 player play via VASSAL module, please contact developer Kevin Boylan at  kevinmboylan@gmail.com

Play Hunt for Blackbeard today! Just click the link at left to download the files you need. Those linked downloads provide everything needed to play the game on line with 2 players, using playtest versions of the rule book, play aid, map legend, and a VASSAL module by Francisco Colmenares.

When you open the VASSAL module, first go to the Help tab and read “Blackbeard Notes”. Then set up the Hunter pieces and Blackbeard’s Loot as described on page 3 of the Rules – Francisco has already set up the rest for you – and start the Sequence of Play on page 4.

Or we welcome you to print out the rules and play aid and just peruse them in conjunction with the examples of play that Volko provides in the InsideGMT articles linked from this webpage.

We hope you'll give Hunt for Blackbeard a try and let us know what you think of this innovative game!

FREE Paths of Glory Card Update Coming in February! Unfortunately, we had a technical oversight (our fault, not the printers) on six of the cards in the PoG Deluxe game. We are reprinting them now (along with two others for which we had an incorrect picture on the card), and expect they'll be in our warehouse in mid February. The specific cards that are being replaced are cards 3,5,8,16,35,39,61, and 65. We'll ship these 8-card packs to all owners of the Deluxe Edition once they're here. We are very sorry we missed these the first time.

------------
FREE Illusions of Glory Update Kit Coming in February! This game had a few errata issues at release, but the designer and test teams have the updates/errata fixes now locked down. The updated rules, PACs, and card edit info are available for free download from the Illusions of Glory Game page (top right under "Living Rules"), but we're also going to send all owners of IoG a Free printed Update Kit, looks like in the mid-late February timeframe. Two things to note:

1. The kit will include 20 corrected cards, a new Rules Booklet, and updated Player Aid Cards.

2. If you didn't order IoG directly from us, but bought it through a store or other third party, please contact our office folks later this year and let them know you'd like to be added to the ship list for the Update Kit.

Coming This Week in InsideGMT .
Here's an update from Rachel on this week's upcoming InsideGMT articles:

Lots of great content this week on InsideGMT!

First up this week on InsideGMT, we published Part 3 in an excellent AAR series from William Byrne where he narrates his playtest of one of the Alt-History scenarios from Death Valley. If you need to catch up on the first two articles in this series before reading Part 3, they can be found here and here. Today, we posted Part 2 (of many) of Jeff Horger’s series revealing the teams of Apocalypse Road and discussing the cars and stories behind the game, both fictional and real. Jeff has done a great job building the narrative for this final “Essendarium” race, and if you are a fan of the Thunderverse I highly recommend you check the series out! Then on Friday, we will be publishing part 2 of Michael Gustavsson’s FAB: Crusader AAR series. If you are a fan of the Fast Action Battles series or are just curious about this game, definitely check it out!

I invite you to visit InsideGMT.com this week to check out the above mentioned articles (and more!) from our team of excellent InsideGMT contributors. -Rachel B

Playdek is hard at work on digital Labyrinth, so we don't have an update from Gary at Playdek this month. The Playdek folks did ask me to tell you all that for those who have signed up, the Labyrinth closed Beta should go out in early February. Oh, and they also mentioned that they were going to have "something cool" to announce in our February update. Can't wait to find out what that is....

-------
Regarding the digital version of Commands & Colors: Ancients, check out Rick Martin's recent review in The Armchair General to get a sense of how this one has developed and how it plays right now. This game got off to a rough start, but the folks at Hexwar have made a lot of good upgrades over the past months.I'm hopeful that trend will continue and that we'll see numerous expansions and improvements to the game in 2019.

That's it for this time on the digital side of things.

As noted previously, we're now giving you the exact status of a game inside our system in these updates, with a general estimate of what that means in terms of months until release. For very near-term games, those estimates are going to be very accurate. For the games just going into the art department or nearly there, we are giving you a range of times. Each month you will be able to follow progress as games get added and moved between pre-art, the art department, and the printer.

That said, here is our most current Tentative Production Schedule from Tony and Mark. Games with a ** following their entry are currently at the printer (we are a little more certain about scheduling on these).

Design Updates

Expansion or Extinction - Designer Stuart Pierce

On the Expansion or Extinction front, things are progressing.  I was able to attend a local wargaming weekend here where I taught the game to three players, nothing extraordinary there, except that one of the players was Volko Ruhnke (a name you might be familiar with!)  He was kind enough to write up a tweet https://twitter.com/Volko26/status/1079775685059715072 and to provide me with a couple of insights as to the current state of the game.

His views were certain welcome and very much in line with some of my own thoughts....enough so that my map has undergone a reasonably significant redesign.  Smaller, and less symmetric.  I have included a test version of the new map below ...although it is still undergoing some "tweaking."

I am looking forward to attending Prezcon in Charlottesville Va. in February and showing off the game. - Stuart

Gandhi - Designer Bruce Mansfield

Gandhi is basically in the bag! GMT has all our files and we're just doing some back and forth on the small details. Our playtesters went above and beyond and made sure that Gandhi is going to be a special experience once it hits your table! This last two weeks we spent a lot of time polishing up the brand new single player system (replacing the venerable flowchart), which we are calling Arjuna (AR-juhn-ah) after the hero of the Mahabharata (who also appears in the Bhagavad Gita). This is a card driven system coupled with a brand new way of representing the space selection (modeled after the space selection table in Labyrinth: The Awakening). Bruce, Scott, and I have played about 50 combined games against Arjuna in the last few months and have won a single digit number of games! It's a very tough opponent.

Here's a sample card from Arjuna:

Screen Shot 2019-01-19 at 2.14.10 PM.png

We are very excited to share more details about Arjuna in the coming weeks via InsideGMT so stay tuned. ~Jason Carr, Bruce Mansfield, and Scott Mansfield - The Gandhi Development team

Hunt for Blackbeard - Designer Volko Ruhnke

Hunt for Blackbeard—After a robust series of tests by several gaming groups, we are now confident enough that most games will play in 30-45 minutes. Volko has worked with his sons Andrew and Daniel to add to options for both the Blackbeard and Pirate Hunter players and to balance the effects of the five types of game tiles. Best of all, the talented Vassal module designer Francisco Colmenares has created an easy-to-use module that you can try out yourself for free! Go to the Hunt for Blackbeard P500 page and download the module, Rules of Play, and play aids and let us know what you think! - Volko

Art is proceeding quickly on game #1 in my newest game series. Check out the Sneak Peek earlier in this section of Chechu Nieto’s nearly complete, beautiful game board. Counters, stickers, and mat art from Mark Simonitch are done, and Chechu will begin work shortly on the four decks of cards. Finally, Wendell and I are preparing a rich Background Booklet for the game, with strategy tips, examples of play, and a volume of historical detail. - Volko

So, a quick update for 2019.

(1) Wing Leader: Victories second edition and the Wing Leader: Eagles expansion set are both complete, ready to print. I’m now waiting on GMT to decide when they will go into production on these. I signalled them before Christmas that I was ready to roll, but they haven’t yet gotten back to me. They may yet decide that there are not enough pre-orders and that they want to wait before they publish, in which case I’d like to ask for support. If you haven’t yet done so, please go to the GMT P500 page and place your pre-orders there. https://www.gmtgames.com/s-2-p500.aspx

(2) Now that Wing Leader: Eagles is ready for publication, I’m moving on to work on the third expansion set. Just this weekend I rolled out a draft of the third expansion, Wing Leader: Origins, for the test team to review.

The new expansion will not be going onto P500 until we are closer to being print-ready, but it’s going to be a big one, covering the early war and pre-war periods. Scenarios range from China to Spain, Poland and Finland. It will touch on the invasion of the Netherlands, as well as the Dutch in the Far East. There’s even a Czech 1938 counterfactual in there. And the centrepiece is a 1942 campaign set on Malta.

New aircraft would include the early German types, such as the Bf 109B and D. There are Dutch and Finnish ‘light’ Buffalos; Polish fighters and bombers; Italian CR.32s and SM.81s; Japanese Nells and Claudes; and a number of Bomber Command types, including the Wellington, Stirling and Manchester.

(3) The majority of the new expansion has been created by people outside the core team. So we have to thank folks such as Javier Hoyos for a LOT of Spanish scenarios, David Meyler for the Dutch scenarios and Petr Mojžiš for the Czechs. It’s really cool to introduce such different perspectives to the game. We are still firming up the content for Wing Leader: Origins, but here is a tentative scenario list:
  • A Black Day For German Tourists - 13 Nov 36, German ‘volunteers’ are savaged over Madrid

(4) I could do with more hands on deck to help test the new content. Volunteers would join the test forum and have access to all the new draft game files. There’s no money in it, I’m afraid, but contributors get complimentary copies of the game. Please contact me if you’re interested.

Take care. - lee
