Hi everyone!

I want to begin today with a shout-out to our art department. As you'll note when you check out the Tentative Production Schedule late in this update, our art department just sent NINE items to the Printer. Some months you guys only see one or two games go to the printer, but Mark Simonitch, Charlie Kibler, and Rodger MacGowan - and the many fine artists who work with them - are always working away in the background, creating more great-looking components for our games. So this time they've given you guys a ton of new games to look forward to in just a few months. Check those out, and raise a glass to one of the jewels in the GMT Crown: Our Art Department!

------------
This is an especially busy work week here at the GMT offices, as we're prepping to host over 100 gamers starting in two more days at our 37th(!) GMT Weekend at the Warehouse event. I think past attendees are going to be a bit surprised at the spacious warehouse configuration (we have more space now!) that our fine office and warehouse folks have been working long hours to prepare for them.

This twice-yearly event is a favorite of mine, not just because we host it here at GMT's "home base," but because it's such a great time to renew friendships and welcome new attendees to the family of Weekend at the Warehouse Warriors. I also get to meet with numerous designers and developers, and am very much looking forward this time to getting a first-hand look at several new game designs as well as assessing progress on games already in our design pipeline. Our friends from Playdek will be here again this time, so I'm sure I will also get a detailed update on the various projects we have in the works with them.

A note on digital while I'm thinking of it. I don't have a digital update section in today's update. It's not that I'm ignoring you digital players, I just don't have new information from either Playdek or HexWar that I can share TODAY (Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement later in the week, though!). Hopefully we can have more detailed news for you on those fronts in May.

We have lots of cool new information to share with you at this time, including a very clever new P500 game from Brad Johnson and Wray Ferrell, plus some reprints, a mounted map for Normandy '44, and a 3" deep Space Empires box going up on our P500 list. We also have a bunch of new games in from a couple of our overseas design/distribution partners, Cérigo and Kuro Neko, that I think you'll find interesting and fun. And be sure to check out our How to Play videos below, as we now have outstanding teaching videos for both Sekigahara and Dominant Species: Marine. We'll get to all that in just a bit.

But first, with my "long-time wargamer" hat on, I'd like to point you to a couple of articles that I think you wargamers especially will really enjoy. The first is from InsideGMT. It's called General Eisenhower's Armchair: How War Becomes a Game, by Jared Alexander. Jared's article really connects with my wargamer roots, with a lot of the reasons that I personally enjoy wargames. His description of the Metropolitan Wargamers "bunker" and the people that play games there makes me wish we had a similar place in our city. And his descriptions of how and why people play these type of games had me nodding my head throughout and feeling a little nostalgic for the days when I had a lot more free time to play wargames. Jared, if you're reading this, thanks for taking the time to write that article. It was REALLY well done, and very much appreciated. Thanks!

The second article link that I'd like to share today is a recent article from Dr. James Lacey in War on the Rocks. Dr. Lacey is the Professor of Strategic Studies at the Marine Corps War College. You may remember that we had advertised an event at the Marine War College in early April that utilized several of our Next War series games for training, and that Mitch Land was attending to help facilitate. Dr. Lacey's article focuses on that event. It is part After-Action Report, with great details and pictures of Marine Corps officers and instructors playing a full-blown Global War scenario in Europe, Taiwan, and Korea. But it's also a fascinating look into the mindsets of players as they wrestle with operational and strategic issues, and into the thought processes of an instructor who sees wargaming as a crucial professional exercise to allow mid-high-level officers to grapple with strategic decision-making. This article was fascinating to me, and it made me really proud that we have created something that our professional military finds useful as a teaching tool. I think you'll enjoy it, too. Thanks for writing it, Dr. Lacey!

Check out Dr. Lacey's article here:

Now let's move on to the rest of today's news....

New and Restocked Games from Cérigo
(formerly Vae Victis).  We've recently received a new shipment of games from our friends at Cérigo Editions. The shipment includes four new games and three popular reprints back in stock. Don't let the fact that these games are sold in ziplock packs deter you; these are well-designed historical wargames. We have these in limited quantities (listed below). Get yours soon if you'd like a copy, as we almost always sell out of these quickly.

Three existing titles back in stock: (Click the links below for more info and to order)

Four new titles:  (Click the links below for more info and to order)

An Interesting New Game from Richard Berg and the team at Kuro Neko Designs.  The Dragon and the Cross is Richard Berg's new game from our friends at Kuro Neko. It covers the Rise and Fall of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom from 1851-1868. It features a beautiful map and counters, as well as solid history on a period that we don't see many wargames cover. The copies we have in stock have rules in both Mandarin and English. We have 100 copies in stock, so get yours soon if you want one. Here's the link to the Game Page on our site for more info and to order: The Dragon and The Cross

New Dice for Commands & Colors Medieval. We have a surprise for our C&C Medieval players: custom dice at no extra cost! Tony has found us some really nice custom dice for C&C Medieval to replace the planned stickered dice approach we've used in our other C&C games. They are 18mm, rounded corner, and laser printed. So no dice stickering this time! Here's a peek at the custom dice:

If you C&C fans like these dice as much as we anticipate, we'll work on making sets available as limited P500 items for our other C&C games in the near future.

Upcoming Game Photography Workshop. For those of you attending the GMT Weekend at the Warehouse this coming weekend, please remember that professional photographer Scott Mansfield will be hosting a Photography workshop to help us all take better game photos at 1 pm on Saturday. Note, too, that Scott is planning to video the workshop so that we can make it available later online for those of you who can't attend the Weekend.

New P500 AdditionsWe have one new P500 addition this month, as well as two game reprints and a new Mounted Map. To get more details on each of the items listed below or to Pre-order, just click on the banner or box to go to the game's P500 page.

The Barracks Emperors Here's a fast-playing strategy card game from the creators of Time of Crisis! This game is set in the same period as ToC - Rome's Imperial Crisis of the 3rd Century A.D. If you like the history of the Roman Empire or just want a family-friendly game you can play in a short evening, this game's for you! Just click the banner or this link to the P500 page for more info and to order.

------------
New P500 Reprint Additions. We are adding two new P500 Reprint items to our list this time.

Normandy '44, 3rd Printing. Designer Mark Simonitch's 19xx series of operational WWII games continues to be one of our most popular hex-and-counter wargame series.  If you don't have this one already, order now and help us get one of the best games in Mark's series back in stock.

Space Empires 4X, 4th Printing. Designer Jim Krohn's "Space Game for Wargamers" continues to be one of our best-sellers. We're sold out again, so we're adding a 4th Printing to our P500 Reprint list. This time, based on customer requests, it will come in a 3" deep box. (For those of you who own previous versions and want the 3" box, we're making one available separately via P500. See below.). If you want a great space wargame, check this one out!

------------
New P500 Mounted Map and 3" Box.

Based on popular demand, we are today adding a Normandy '44 Mounted Map option to P500. Note that the 3rd printing of the game will NOT contain a mounted map (neither of the other printings did, either). If you'd like one to upgrade your copy of the game, this option is for you!

Also based on numerous customer requests, we are today adding a 3" Box foSpace Empires 4X option to P500. You don't need this if you're ordering the 4th Printing of the game via P500. But if you have an older version of the game and would like a deeper box to store components and trays, you now have that option.

------------

Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. Note that this is not a comprehensive list, so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. My previous hint of "A strategy card game with an ancients theme" referred to this month's new The Emperor's Barracks.  Over the coming several months, I anticipate that we will add:
  • A new WWI game by a designer with one GMT design already published.
  • An 18xx game set outside the US (rats, we almost had it ready for this month - hopefully May)
  • A new 20th century strategic game
  • An expansion for one of our CDGs
  • An expansion for one of our 2018 Best-sellers

Coming This Week in InsideGMT.
Here's an update from Rachel on this week's upcoming InsideGMT articles:

Lots of great content this week on InsideGMT!

First up this week on InsideGMT, we published the last in a series of articles from Dave Ratynski reflecting on his recent playtest of Tank Duel Scenario 2: Hold the High Ground using the solo rules (also referred to as Robata). We highly recommend checking this series out! You can find all of the previous parts of the series here.

On the blog today, we have a brief example of Fire Resolution in The Last Hundred Yards from designer Mike Denson. He has also written brief examples of Platoon Activation and Assault in The Last Hundred Yards in previous articles on InsideGMT. If you would like to read either of those articles, they can be found here and here

Tomorrow, you can look forward to seeing a fantastic article from blog contributor Kiki Esparrago discussing the significance of dice rolling probability in Hitlers Reich, so stay tuned!

Thursday on InsideGMT, you will see Part 6 of Francisco Colmenarez’s Normandy ’44 Campaign After Action Report. The previous five parts can be found here. If you are interested in learning more about Normandy ’44, this series is a great place to start.

Finally on Friday, we will be posting an article from developer Fred Schachter showcasing the diceless method used to resolve Competition (aka “Battles”) in Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea. If you are interested in learning more about this game, you can also check out the many other InsideGMT articles the design team has written here.

I invite you to visit InsideGMT.com this week to check out the aforementioned articles (and more!) from our team of excellent InsideGMT contributors.

As noted previously, we're now giving you the status of a game inside our system in these updates, with a general estimate of what that means in terms of months until release. For very near-term games, those estimates are going to be very accurate. For the games just going into the art department or nearly there, we are giving you a range of times. Each month you will be able to follow progress as games get added and moved between pre-art, the art department, and the printer.

Design Updates

Tank Duel - Developer Jason Carr

Tank Duel is, for all intents and purposes, done. We handed off the Play Book to the very capable Charlie Kibler this week and expect to finish up the last bits of artwork with Terry Leeds very soon. Thank you to everyone who helped make Tank Duel a reality; we can't wait for you to have the game and get to play it.

If you haven't seen Dave Ratynski's multi-part session report on his epic loss to Robata (the solo system), make sure to check it out. Dave did a great job and was a huge help to us in getting Robata just right and making the Play Book great.

Again, thanks to everyone who played Tank Duel at the warehouse, on Vassal, or through playtesting. We couldn't have done it without you! - Jason
