We are saddened by the loss of Chad Jensen after a courageous battle against cancer. Chad is survived by his wife, Kai Jensen, and the two are highly respected individuals with a big following. Chad is well known for his game design work for Combat Commander, Dominant Species, Fighting Formations, Welcome to Centerville, and Urban Sprawl to name a few in terms of his creative genius. He will be sorely missed.
I was first introduced to one of Chad's design, like most others, with the truly masterful design, "Combat Commander". Although initially skeptical, I grew to like the system quite a bit. Because of its popularity, it's never difficult to find opponents for it, and as a consequence I probably have more hours logged playing the Combat Commander series than any other single wargame.
Later, having played and enjoyed his follow-on cross-over hit Dominant Species, I was blown away by the design for Fighting Formations. It's rare to have one excellent and innovative wargame system design, and Chad did it twice. In addition, he enjoyed rare wargame to euro cross-over success as the designer of Dominant Species, which has a robust player fanbase.
Chad's rulebook for Combat Commander remains for me the gold standard for wargame rules, clear, concise, and absolutely unambiguous. Game play was fun and fast-paced, and like Fighting Formations, seldom traded accuracy for playability, finding an excellent balance. Fighting Formations never managed quite the same fan following as the hugely popular Combat Commander series, but I actually like it even more, myself.
Chad's forum style was terse and sometimes a bit acerbic, but he always took the time to answer clearly and effectively. I greatly admired him as a designer and as a genuinely good presence in the online community.
I never had the privilege of meeting him personally, but I find myself moved by the deep respect and admiration his players and his peers found for him.
My deep condolences and sincere sympathies to Kai and Chad's family.
I'm going to try to play at least one of his games tomorrow at a wargaming gathering in celebration of his life and design legacy.
No adequate words to add...I'm sad, I wish the best for Kai, I'm glad I've gotten to play some of Chad's games, and I look forward to a game of "Combat Commander" I'll be playing in his honor on Sunday.
I am very sorry to hear this news. I value my games by Chad, and his example with Kai during his illness is uplifting. I don’t think I ever met Chad face to face, but I have gotten to know something of his kind and brave nature over the past months and I will remember him fondly, and remember him together with friends in this hobby.
terribly sad news.
Living in the Bay Area, I did get to meet Chad and Kai down at Endgame in Oakland.
I met my best friend and game buddy while he was playing against Chad in a learning game of Combat Commander. Chad made him play the French! We started working together against Chad and came w/in a roll of taking him down, but alas Chad had the last laugh. He was a passionate man. A perfectionist and driven to make his games invincible. Damn if he didn't succeed.
I own every war game and module he ever produced and love them all.
Combat Commander is an easy choice for me as my Desert Island Game.
We'll miss you Chad, rest in peace.
Rest In Peace Chad. I can only hope and pray for your lovely wife Kai and that she is able to endure this difficult time. Your contribution to our hobby will not be forgotten. A sad day for our hobby.
Combat Commander is my favorite game. His other designs are outstanding and have also given many hours of enjoyment. For never having met him personally, I am quite sad. His death is a reminder that you never know when you'll pull a Time Trigger and hit Sudden Death in this life. But he left many gifts for the community. The peace of Jesus and the hope of the resurrection be with Kai and his family.
I met Chad at WBC and played CC with him. He was a patient teacher. He had a great gift for game design and there was no one better at balancing chaos with player control in both his war games and non war games. I hope GMT continues to develop his FF, CC, and Dominant Species game lines. FF is the penultimate Descendant of Panzerblitz.
I just logged back into facebook after taking a bit of a Social Media break only for the first post I saw to be about the passing of Chad Jensen. Chad & Kai were two of the first people at met at, I think, my very first or maybe second Consimworld Expo and unlike many Games Designers Chad was uber friendly and had an extremely effective way of simply explaining even the most complex of rules systems (Although I wouldn't class his games as such) - I was one among the group of people who first playtested Fighting Formations at a subsequent Expo, playing games with both Chad & Kai, I enjoyed it so much that every time I went back to the con, I always pestered them to play a game with me. It was such an elegant rules system and I was just blown away by how clever it was. Chad would fit in more gaming than most at any single con, jumping from game to game and often bringing his latest invention for us all to see. It was funny hearing Kai's stories of Chad suddenly waking up one night with the latest rules system in his head and having to jump on the computer and writing it all down. We later shared a Band Of Gamers trip in Normandy together, which with the late Richard Berg along, was an experience, to say the least. Chad wasn't himself that trip and it affected our friendship a little, although when I saw him at the next con, he was his old self again, minus a ton of body weight and had gone super healthy. When Chad got sick earlier this year, many of us followed his and Kai's journal of their battle against cancer on facebook. If anyone could beat it, I thought it was Chad, and Kai cared for him and fought to ensure his survival, like a General marshaling an army, except her troops were different medications and food regimes. How she did this superhuman feat, caring for him, the way no one else could, will be one of lifes unsolvable mysteries.Following their battles was heartbreaking, but also so heartwarming. I've never born witness to such a portrayal of enduring strength between two people before and to have been able to look through the window of such an intimate, raw and emotional time for them both was a true privilege. Kai will not be short on support from our community and I truly hope she makes the convention next year, I for one will raise to give the hugest hug known to mankind. There's a group of dozen or so people I always look forward to seeing at every EXPO, when I make it out there, and Chad and Mark Hendricks were always both at the top of that list. To think that both of them will no longer be there fills my heart with sadness but makes me more determined despite my present dire financial state and being in the middle of a divorce to try and come out for 2020. I will really try and be there, so we can raise a toast to one of the best, most innovative games designers of all time, the late, the great, Chad Jensen.
