Hi everyone!

I hope you are all safe and well and are getting some time this summer to enjoy a few games.

Supply Chain and Shipping Slowdown. As I noted last month, we're in a bit of a slow period at the GMT Warehouse/Office as we wait for our printers to begin shipping us some of the 21 new products that are currently being printed. The same global supply chain and shipping issues that are hampering businesses worldwide are having a negative impact on our operations, too. Both the time to get games printed (due to the issues they are having with their component supplies) and the shipping time to our warehouse (which has doubled over the past few months) are seeing big delays at the moment.

Still, we did just get a notification that three games will ship out to us at the end of July, which with current shipping times should mean we get them in early to mid September. So, at least we're starting to see games that are at the tail end of the printing process and prepping to ship. Tony is telling me that this should accelerate over the coming months and that between September and the end of November we should see most, if not all, of those 21 new products in our warehouse.

Of course, we have plenty of other games nearing print readiness as well, and we'll continue to send those to the printer as our art department has them ready (see the Production Outlook later in this update for current details). We're hopeful that we'll see some improvement on both the supply chain and shipping sides before year end, but in the meantime, we've just had to adjust our planning to take the delays into account. The result has been this "lull" in new games between now and early September. Once the pipeline is open again, though, we should see a steady stream of new products to ship out to you all for the remainer of 2021.

The GMT Weekend at the Warehouse is ON for this Fall! Note that we have committed to holding a Weekend at the Warehouse this October 14-17 (unless something changes drastically on the COVID restrictions front). I've added back the "Coming Events" section later in this update, so please check there for details on that event and several others that we're excited about.

Now let's move on to the rest of this month's news...

This Month's Box Back Sneak Peek. Your feedback has been excellent on including these sneak peeks of the box backs here every month, so I'll keep posting them as long as Mark and Terry and their teams have something to show you. This month, here's a look at a box back for Volko's upcoming Almoravid. Enjoy!

GMT One - Jason Carr. Thank you to all the folks who responded to our call for playtesters for Fall of Saigon and Fields of Fire. This month we are asking for solo testers for The Weimar Republic (see Playtesters/Help Wanted section below)!

Since we went public with GMT One in January, our team has worked on over a dozen games with Solo modes and announced support for seven more CDGs through the CDG Solo System. In the coming months, we have many new projects to announce and even more playtesting opportunities to come. Additionally, our team is growing, and we expect to be announcing some new surprises for you all in the coming months. Thank you for all the support you've shown. Enjoy the games! - Jason

--------------
Playtesters/Help Wanted! On an ongoing basis, I'll use this section to let you know which of our design teams currently need extra testers. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the team members for the game you are interested in at the links below. We greatly appreciate you helping us test our games and make them better! Thank you!

  • The British Way. Developer Joe Dewhurst is looking for playtesters for our newest COIN series title, either through Print N' Play or via TableTop Simulator. If you are interested, please sign up to playtest here
  • The Weimar Republic. GMT One designer Joe Schmidt has been working with The Weimar Republic designer Gunnar Holmbäck on a unique solitaire system for his unique CDG. We are looking for playtesters to help Joe put the system through its paces; if you're interested, please sign up to playtest.
  • The Last Hundred Yards. Designer Mike Denson is looking for playtesters for upcoming missions for The Last Hundred Yards. We have a very good LHY Vassal module for those that prefer to play online. If you own and have played The Last Hundred Yards Vol 1 or 2 and would like to help playtest, please sign up here.

TableTop Simulator (TTS) Update. I mentioned a couple months back that we were building a TTS Modder team, led by the immensely talented Jordan Kehrer, to help you all get the most out of the TTS modules that exist and are being created for our games. This team has created multiple Wiki pages, where they'll be updating us every month on what's happening and what's new with our TTS mods. To see this month's full Wiki update, including the team's recommendations of two exceptional TTS modules for GMT games, click here.

For a brief look at the type of information the Modder team is providing, here's an excerpt from this month's update:

A part of GMT TTS Modder's team mission is to make the GMT content already available on Tabletop Simulator more discoverable to the GMT Community. This is deceptively difficult. We have persevered however and created a wiki containing all GMT Mods available for TTS. Here is a sample of some of the most popular GMT Mods on TTS…

  1. Twilight Struggle (OnTheLastCastle ) - Subscribers: 16065
  2. Fire in the Lake (ZiRo) - Subscribers: 11491
  3. Dominant Species (tetrach21) - Subscribers: 8662
  4. Commands & Colors: Napoleonics (NETes) - Subscribers: 4860
  5. Fire in the Lake (Brainfood) - Subscribers: 4166
  6. A Distant Plain (ZiRo) - Subscribers: 4126
  7. The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43 (Snidely) - Subscribers: 3959
  8. Commands & Colors: Ancients (Sandy) - Subscribers: 3934
  9. Paths of Glory (kuothe) - Subscribers: 3674
  10. Twilight Struggle (UsF) - Subscribers: 3619

We also want to bring to your attention the latest GMT mod additions to the Tabletop simulator. Since May, the following games have been added to the Steams TTS Workshop…

New P500 Additions. We have two exciting new P500 games and a Mission Pack for The Last Hundred Yards this time!

Our first new P500 addition todayDownfallis a game that some of you saw Chad and Kai Jensen working on in public playtests at Consimworld Expo at various times over the past dozen years. Chad really poured his heart into that game, and for a while there, it seemed like every year he'd bring a better version of it to CSW Expo and subject it to several days of playtesting where he and Kai poked and prodded the design to improve it. Then he'd take it home and mold and craft it privately based on what they'd learned in the public tests, never quite satisfied that it was ready to pass the "Jensen Test" that meant it was ready to go up on our P500 list.

For the last few years that he worked on the game there at the Expo, when I'd ask him if it was getting close to ready (usually over shared breakfasts at the table where he and Kai held court in the back of the room), he'd sigh and say "everything but the combat system is ready. I can't quite get it right YET." And because he was my friend, I'd smile and say something like "You know, Chad, correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't a COMBAT SYSTEM a pretty important part of a WARGAME?" He'd look up and see the smile on my face, shake his head and mutter something uncomplimentary, and then we'd move on to other topics. But we both knew that interaction of game sub-systems was always an integral part of Chad's process. He designed unique systems, often with innovative interactions, but he'd never want "hey it's new, you've never seen this before!" to be the reason players bought his games. Chad was never going to be willing to release a game until HE was happy that all the game's systems fit together perfectly. Behind the friendly teasing, I greatly respected his dedication to getting it right and always had the utmost confidence that Chad would figure it out, and that when he did, Downfall was going to be an absolute gem.

Well, as most of you probably know, life took a cruel and unexpected turn, and Chad was taken from us in November of 2019. Like some of you, I still mourn the loss of my friend. After Chad passed and enough time had passed that we could get through a phone conversation without both of us crying, one of the things Kai and I discussed was whether and how we might be able to continue to publish games in the series that Chad established (like Combat Commander and Fighting Formations) and also whether we could get a few of his unfinished projects into publishable form. We decided that we'd begin to put the word out, among the pool of talented designers who we knew, that we were looking for people with the talent and the desire to finish some of these designs. And Downfall was one of the games we mentioned during those conversations.

Enter John Butterfield. As most wargamers know, John is a massively talented and experienced designer who has created some of the most respected games (for example, RAF and Ambush!) in the history of our hobby. He had long been a fan of Chad's work (and had contributed some scenarios for some of our Combat Commander Battle Packs) and had become good friends with Chad and Kai when they worked with him as Developers on his SpaceCorp design for us. John let us know that not only was he interested in working on Downfall, but that he would be honored to work with Kai to help bring Chad's creation to publication.

True to his word, John has poured himself into finishing Downfall. As you might imagine, it has not been an easy journey, especially after we couldn't find any rulebook for the game among Chad's files. (Either the file was lost or Chad kept the rulebook in his head - we don't know.) So John has worked in concert with Kai to make sure that he understood everything that she knew of how the game worked and then has set out to craft the final version of Downfall - including a new rulebook - as if it were his own design. And Kai has helped and supported him all along the way, as has our Director of Development, Jason Carr. I know that Chad would be so happy that John was the one who chose to take on this project, and that the final Downfall design is now a product that combines both of their creative and organizational talents.

Now that the game is ready to go, I believe that wargamers and strategy gamers alike are going to find many hours of enjoyment with this unique creation from two of our hobby's brightest stars.

Downfall: Conquest of the Third Reich, 1942-1945

------------
COIN series players rejoice! Our second new P500 today is The British Way: Counterinsurgency at the End of Empire, designed by Stephen Rangazas. Stephen has been a tremendous help to Jason and the COIN team over the past couple of years and has now created a COIN game (well, actually FOUR games in one box) of his own.

The British Way is the first of what we hope will be several COIN series multipacks containing interesting games tied together by a common theme. This volume features two-player games that are focused on British counterinsurgency during the 1940s and 1950s, with games on Malaya, Kenya, Palestine, and Cyrus.

Each game takes place on a 17 x 22 mounted mapboard and features quick-but-deep gameplay. You can play each game in the box to completion in under 90 minutes. Within the broader COIN gameplay framework, Stephen has crafted rulesets and mechanism for each game that highlight the different British approaches to each conflict; thus for COIN series veterans you get familiar rules that are easy to pick up but that also offer a unique and distinct experience for each of the four games.

To top it all off, Stephen has created an “End of Empire” Campaign scenario that allows players to play the four games in a linked series with a cumulative scoring system, random ‘external’ events relating to British decolonization, and new mechanics to integrate each game into the campaign. Yeah, he had me at "linked campaign." But it's really the overall package that impresses me. It immerses players in conflicts that are not often gamed and offers games that are both approachable enough for COIN newcomers and meaty enough for veterans of the series. I think you're really going to like this one!

Designer Mike Denson and his team are rapidly creating new content for his popular The Last Hundred Yards series. After creating the first three core games in the series, Mike and his team are now moving forward with expanding series content.

So today we're adding the first installment of that new content to P500. It's a new 10-mission Mission Pack focused on the Allied campaign in western Europe in 1944. This mission pack will allow you to experience key tactical engagements from 1944, from the post-invasion "Hedgerow Hell" in July to the early stages of the Battle of the Bulge in December. This Mission Pack will provide you with new maps, mission cards, special rules for new weapons and terrain, and plenty of new situations and tactical puzzles to enhance your enjoyment of the LHY series.

New P500 Reprint Additions. None this time.

P500 Expansions/Upgrades/Mounted Maps. Based on requests from players of Mark Simonitch's operational games, we are offering a Mounted Map P500 option for Salerno '43.

Important: This is a late P500 addition, so please get your P500 order in quickly if you want a mounted map. Salerno '43 is going to the printer in the next couple of weeks, and we will print the Mounted Maps along with the game. We'll use the number of orders that we have for the mounted map by October 15
plus a few extras—as a basis for the how many of these we order from the printer.

P500 Removals. None this time.

Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. This month's new The British Way is the game referred to in April's clue of "A first for the COIN series - a multi 4-pack," and Downfall was teased as "A new WWII Europe Strategic Game from a couple of award-winning designers." Note that this is not a comprehensive list (nor will I preview EVERY game we have planned), so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. Over the coming 1-6 months, I anticipate that we will add:

  • A new Levy & Campaign series game
  • A Napoleonic-era game from Ted Raicer
  • A strategy game set in Afghanistan
  • A new bot package for one of our most popular COIN games
  • A new operational WWII game from Mark Simonitch

GMT Games' Weekend at the Warehouse is back! Come join us at our warehouse and offices in Hanford this October 14-17, 2021 for three and a half days of face-to-face gaming fun! This October, we're excited to commit to hosting our first Weekend at the Warehouse since the Fall of 2019! I hope that many of you will be able to attend. The cost for the event is still just $40 per attendee. To reserve your spot at the event, please contact our office folks via phone or chat.

For lodging, we have set up reservation blocks with two local hotels (The Sequoia Inn—where many have stayed for past events—and Home2Suites by Hilton). Note that hotel rates have risen over the past couple years, and the Sequoia Inn has renovated their rooms since the last Weekend. Both hotels are about 1.5 miles from our office/warehouse with easy access to the highway. Here is the contact info for each:

Sequoia Inn: Singles $114.95/night; Doubles $119.95/night
Call 559-582-0339 for reservations. Ask for the GMT Group Block rate.

Home2Suites: King Studio Suites (One King bed plus a fold out queen sofa bed) $139/night. Reservations are ONLINE-ONLY. Click here and Use this direct Group Booking Link to get the GMT discounted $139/night rate.

As I mentioned last month, we're going to open this first "return to the Weekend" event only to fully vaccinated attendees, and we will not require masks for the event. Note that California requirements or the overall COVID situation could change between now and October, so we might have to adjust as the evolving situation dictates. For now, though, that is our plan.

------------
We are also excited about two other upcoming events that we are sponsoring and supporting in concert with Harold Buchanan and all our friends on the team at SDHistcon. The first is SDHistCon: COINFest, a 1-day online mini-con focused solely on our popular Counter-Insurgency (COIN) game series on August 7, 2021. The SDHistCon team has assembled a host of COIN designers and experts to teach and play various titles in the series, including: Cuba Libre, Fire in the Lake, Falling Sky, Pendragon, All Bridges Burning, A Distant Plain and more. I’ll also be attending this mini-con online and hope to see some of you there. As of this writing, tickets are already sold out, but we’re happily looking forward to similar events in the future!

GMT is also proud to be a sponsor and supporter of WargameCon, the new historical boardgaming event to be held at Dice Tower West in Las Vegas on March 2-6, 2022. This exclusive gaming space within Dice Tower West (we like to think of it as a “con-within-a-con”) will feature 5 full days of teaching, demoing, and exploring historical board- and wargames. WargameCon is being organized by Harold Buchanan and his San Diego Historical Board Games Convention (SDHistCon) team and will include some amazing events including a Combat Commander Training Center, a COINCamp, and many others.

Like GMT Games, the SDHistCon team believes strongly in growing the hobby, and so will also be working closely with two of the best boardgame instructors in the world, Karl Kreder and Tim Porter of the famous Wargame Bootcamp. We’re really looking forward to working with them to give all Dice Tower West attendees an exciting look at the historical boardgaming genre. On the GMT side, we plan to be there in force, bringing products and prizes as well as several well-known GMT designers and developers to teach and demo games throughout the con at this cool new face-to-face wargaming and strategy gaming venue. More detailed info on events at WargameCon is coming soon, and we’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

Here is our most current Production Status update from Tony and Mark. We update these monthly so that you will be able to follow progress as games get added and moved between pre-art, the art department, and the printer. Games with a ** following their entry are currently at the printer (we are a little more certain about scheduling on these). Entries listed in bold have moved in the Print Queue since last month.

Note that we are seeing a slowdown in deliveries at this point due to west coast port congestion and delays. The information below has been adjusted in light of this.

Project Updates

Flashpoint South China Sea - Developer Jason Carr

The magnificent Terry Leeds has laid out our multiplayer rulebook, and playtesters are taking a final pass through the solitaire game materials before we finish art and layout and head to the printer. The cards, map, and box look phenomenal! We are thankful for each and every one of you that has contributed to the final product and look forward to getting the first game in the Flashpoint Series into your hands. - Jason

Mons 1914: The Mad Minute - Designer Geoffrey Phipps

The Battle of Mons was the first battle in WWI between the Germans and the British. It took place during the mobile phase of the Schlieefen plan, in Belgium. Both sides learned hard lessons. Mons itself is done, apart from tweaks to the series rules suggested by some groups using the 2.0 series rules with Gallipoli. I have a video with an overview of the battle and the game on YouTube: https://youtu.be/FisZj00rgxs

I have been producing more YouTube videos explaining the important rules in the Rifle and Spade games (Gallipoli 1915 and Mons 1914). The month's video walks through the Orders system, especially changing orders, see: https://youtu.be/1mdbcom6IyU

I will be running a game of Mons at Consimworld Expo in August/September. - Geoff

Mystery Wizard - Designer Zack Eberhart

After a long hiatus, development on Mystery Wizard is picking up steam! Thanks to enthusiasm from the board game community, Mystery Wizard reached it’s preorder goal on P500 back in 2019. Since then, we’ve been working to create some amazing artwork and polish up the game’s mechanics and overall balance. Development unfortunately slowed in 2020, but things are finally back on track. GMT's development staff is assisting long-time developer Andrew Ruhnke on final polish, a 2-player variant, and preparing for the art department, and we can’t wait to share more updates in the months ahead! - Zach

------------
Panzer North Africa - Designer James M. Day

Tigers in the Sand
While initially deployed to the Eastern Front in 1942, the German Tiger heavy tank saw its first significant actions in the closing stages of the North African Campaign as part of the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion
German schwere Panzerabteilung 501, s PzAbt 501known as the Stalking Tigers.

When first deployed, in a break from the typical naming convention, the tank was designated as the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H (armored combat vehicle VI version H) where "H" denoted Henschel as the designer/manufacturer. The tank didn’t receive its more familiar designation PzKpfw VI Ausf. E until March 1943. The Roman numeral “I” was added after the Tiger II entered full-scale production in 1944.

In late-1942, a heavy panzer battalion fielded 20 Tigers and 16 Panzer IIIs in 2 companies each with 4 platoons of 2 Tigers and 2 Panzer IIIs plus 4 company and battalion-level command Tigers. The battalion was never at full-strength. Its tanks arrived piecemeal over the course of its action peaking at only 16 operational Tigers

The Plum Island Horror - Designer Hermann Luttmann and Developer Ken Kuhn

Hey all! First of all, thanks to everyone for all the support of The Plum Island Horror! We "Made The Cut" a few days ago, and the pledges have continued to pour in. So thanks!

Secondly, playtesting has been going gangbusters. Unfortunately, most of the testers who initially signed up to work on the game have since been consumed by the Horrors or have mutated into hideous beasts. Those that did survive are very lucky, but then again they are also all now permanently deranged and traumatized. But hey
who said playtesting was easy, right? And we did get really good feedback before we lost everyone, so there's always an upside.

In all seriousness, we have been flooded with terrific input from our playtesting teams. The game has been really well received, and we've gotten some great suggestions on how to make the design even better. So we hope to update the game in a short while and get the next iteration tested as soon as possible. We believe various pieces of artwork and graphics will be displayed periodically as we move forward, and we think you will love it.

Thanks again, and we are striving to make this game as fun and challenging as possible so you can enjoy it often with friends and family. Best wishes! - Hermann and Ken

Prime Minister - Designer Paul Hellyer

Prime Minister is now closing in on the finish line! With the help of GMT's gamer community, we did a lot more playtesting this past spring on TTS. Our previous playtesting began with demos, but this time we asked our playtesters to learn the game from the rulebook. They tried out the standard multiplayer game, the solitaire version, and the scenarios, submitting about 110 playtest logs and another 30 comments on the rulebook. In response to their feedback and after many additional game simulations, we made a few adjustments to gameplay, planned several clarifications for the rulebook, and noted some requests for GMT's art department. We'd like to thank all our playtesters again, with special thanks to Daniel Thibault for his amazing work on our TTS module.

In other news, we've recently completed some detailed examples of play for publication in the playbook, with one example covering a complete multiplayer game and another covering a complete solitaire game. These examples of play demonstrate how the rules are applied, delve a little into the thematic background of the game, and provide a lot of insight into the game's strategy. Now that our game design work is wrapping up, we recently notified GMT's art department that we're ready to begin art production. In the meantime, please visit us on Prime Minister's BGG page and share any questions you may have about the game. - Paul

------------
Red Dust Rebellion - Developer Adam Blinkinsop

As Gene has shared in the past several newsletters, the art for the Red Dust Rebellion event cards is coming along well. J and I have been focused on making the event effects more powerful and evocative and ensuring that the quality of the art is reflected in each event's text. Finally, we have been tuning events to handle the Church of the Reclaimer (CR) faction better and address playtester feedback on how the CR changes eligibility order. - Adam

------------
The Russian Campaign, Deluxe 5th Edition - Developer John Kranz

Gene was kind enough to remind me to submit a project update for Russian Campaign, to which I immediately thought to myself, "It's been a full month already?!" The extensive rules proofing process remains to be completed, which will take us early into August rather than being done by July. While this is disappointing news, the project timeline has been pushed out by only two weeks, so hope remains that we can submit the game to the printers by the end of August 2021. Thanks again for your continued patience! - John

------------
Vietnam: 1965-1975, GMT Edition - co-Developer Mitchell Land

We are closing in on finalizing the Rules and Player Aid Cards [PACs] for Vietnam. When you’re down to picking photos and quotes with which to decorate the rules and break up the walls of text, you know you’re getting close. I think players, new and old, will be delighted with the updated product. We’ve re-arranged the order of the rules to make them more accessible to new players while keeping them all intact so that old hands won’t be surprised by anything new [Side note, an early draft is available on CSW in the Vietnam topic if you want to check them out].

We also think players will enjoy the PACs as they will make it easier to play both the Operational (new name for non-Campaign scenarios) and Campaign Scenarios. Ralph and I would like to take a moment to thank the dedicated proof-readers who have diligently read and re-read the rules and PACs to make them as clear as possible. Without their hard work, we’d not have gotten this far this fast. We’d also like to thank Justin for his hard work at making the game beautiful from maps to PACS and everything in between. - Mitch
