Hi everyone!

We just completed a tremendously fun (and exhausting) Weekend at the Warehouse here last weekend. We had about 110 attendees this time (I tried to cap it at 100, but I just couldn't say no to a few more folks who wanted to come). There were about 30 new attendees this time, along with lots of folks who've been to the event many times. I'm always excited by seeing first-timers' being welcomed and involved in playing so many games and of course I also find great joy in playing games and catching up again with longtime friends and veterans of the Weekend at the Warehouse.

For the first time in our history of the Weekend's 39 events, we used our covered outside space for something other than parking. We brought in a bunch of extra tables and chairs and used the large outdoor area as a mixed snack and "take a break without your masks" venue, and even - because the weather all four days was AWESOME - had quite a few groups playing their games outdoors. And on Saturday we met outside for my "Inside GMT" presentation, designer updates, and Q&A time. Then later for dinner, we brought in a mobile kitchen from one of my personal favorite local restaurants and used the space for 3 hours of all-you-can-eat street tacos! The feedback we got on using the outdoor space that way was overwhelmingly positive, so we're already planning to make similar use of it at future Weekends, as weather permits.

Even with having to wear masks inside, it seemed like everyone really enjoyed the event. And it was just SO GREAT to see so many long-time friends and online friends we had not yet met face-to-face and first-time attendees and get to play games and hang out together for four days! So many people commented over the weekend "I really needed this." I think we all did. Amidst the stress of our lives and the varying stages of isolation - for many of us - over the past 18 months, this Weekend at the Warehouse was an oasis of fun and friendship. I needed it, too. Thanks to all of you who attended! You made my week - and probably my year! I hope you all found much joy and relaxation and fun with old and new friends at the Weekend. I can't wait until we do this again in April!

I want to be sure to publicly thank Elizabeth, our Office Manager, and all of our office and warehouse staff for everything they did to make this Weekend at the Warehouse so successful. They transformed and deep cleaned our warehouse, set up a brand new outdoor space, arranged all the details of tables, chairs, snacks, and venue layout, spending dozens of extra hours in the process. And during the weekend, they worked a lot of overtime to make sure they could be on-hand to help with any attendee needs or requests and to keep the space clean, free of trash, and sanitized (no small feat with 100+ attendees). And Saturday they assisted a bunch of our customers with buying games, finding old or obscure accessory items, updating P500 orders, then later worked all the details of dinner with the caterers and oversaw the entire process. They were (and ARE) amazing! So, to Elizabeth and the whole team: Thank you all so much for the extra hours and preparation you put into this Weekend and for your constant willingness to help me and our customers before and during the event. You were the glue that held it all together and we all appreciate you! You are the best! Thank you!

GMT One - Jason Carr. 2021 continues to fly by, and GMT One continues to be hard at work. This month, we have a GMT One product shipping out to you - Tank Duel North Africa and Tank Pack #1! The Robata solo opponent is waiting for you, with new challenges in the sun and heat of the desert. In these expansions, every one of the new Scenarios supports Robata (11 from North Africa and 6 from the Tank Pack). That includes the 11 Historical Scenarios split between these two games. This was a major goal of the project - 100% Robata compatibility - and we really hope you enjoy the games.

This month we spent a good deal of time testing the Twilight Struggle Red Sea Solo Opponent. This system is loosely based on the exceptional system in Shores of Tripoli, designed by Kevin Bertram at Fort Circle Games. He was gracious enough to allow us to riff on his work, so with some input from Jason Matthews we have been tuning the bot. Right now it is particularly vulnerable to the Africa Scoring auto-win condition, so GMT One developer Joe Dewhurst and I are working to shore up the logic in the space selection. The Solo Opponent in TR:RS is also heavily indebted to the work done by Adam Zahm for the Labyrinth series, and fans of that game will find this system intuitive.

It's hard to believe that GMT One is almost a year old - last December, Gene and I were planning how to roll out our little skunkworks project. There are many GMT One projects in flight - Vijayanagara, The Weimar Republic, The Bell of Treason, Prime Minister, People Power, and many, many more. Stay tuned - there's much more to come. - Jason

Interview with Paul Hellyer, Designer of Prime Minister. The Spanish-language gaming blog Mesa de Guerra recently posted an excellent interview with Paul Hellyer about his game Prime Minister: And, because sometimes the internet IS very cool, when you visit the interview site, there's an auto-translation to English, for all of us who are a bit "Spanish-language challenged." Enjoy! https://mesadeguerra.com/entrevista-paul-hellyer-prime-minister/

New P500 Additions. We have three exciting new games to add to our P500 list this time, as well as two P500 Reprints that we want to get back in stock!

The first is a new game that doesn't have any series affiliation for us, which means that it might tend to get overlooked a bit. I want to encourage you NOT to overlook this game. Why? First off, the design/development team - Brian Asklev, Fred Serval, and Joe Dewhurst - is a bunch of really smart guys with deep knowledge of the period this game represents, who also have experience working in our systems. The have combined their talents to create a real gem in this strategy game covering a century and a half of Northern European conflicts. Here are a few things I really like:
  • It's a big strategic game with a simple but pretty deep economic system built in. Since my early years of counting BRPs in Third Reich, I have loved games where what you can do on the map is a function of how well you command your economy.
  • The (up to) five sides in any scenario are asymmetric - they all have unique abilities and objectives. Volko and his COIN series have forever spoiled me when it comes to the virtues of games that portray asymmetries between factions. So I can't wait to learn about how that plays out in the Baltic region in the late 16th to early 18th centuries.
  • They have Dramatis Personae cards! I don't know that much about this region or fhe world during this period, and I like to use new games like this as a base from which to read and explore further to expand my understanding. I love that there are cards for key people in the era - most of whom I don't know anything about right now. Here's a playtest version of a few:

Click the link or the banner below for more details.

Baltic Empires: The Northern Wars of 1588-1721

------------
Our second new P500 addition today is also not a series game per se. However, it does use much of the popular game system from Matt Calkin's popular Sekigahara design, so those of you who have played that game already know many of the mechanics used in this one.

In Bear Trap, designer P.R. Daniels uses and enhances the Seigahara system to create a beautiful portrayal of the strengths and weakness of the sides during the decade-long Soviet-Afghan War.

Bear Trap  is certainly not a "clone" of Sekigahara—they are very different games with differences in topic, feel, and mechanism, despite having an underlying shared game system - including the "loyalty" aspects of the system that players so enjoy (well, unless it's YOUR troops who were disloyal). Befitting the strengths and tactics of the combatants in this war, Bear Trap is also a more asymmetric game than Sekigahara. Although Bear Trap is a slight step up in complexity from Sekigahara, the mechanics remain simple.  For those of you concerned about long playing times, Bear Trap can be completed in 2-3 hours.

We also have a strong and reliable team on this one. Bear Trap is a game that Andy Lewis, well known for his keen eye for promising games, brought to us after the designer showed it to Andy some time ago. The game is being developed by Joe Dewhurst, who we expect, based on what we've seen from Joe on other projects, will work with the designer and their testers to polish this design even further before it lands on our game tables.

Click the banner below for more details!

Bear Trap: The Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989

------------
Our final new P500 addition today is Volume 4 in Mike Denson's popular series, The Last Hundred Yards. Thus far in his series, Mike's innovative WWII tactical combat system has transported us from Western Europe to the far-flung islands of the Pacific. We've fought with US Army and Airborne troops against the Germans in their race across towards Germany. And we've hit the beaches and cleared Pacific islands as US Marines in vicious close-quarters engagements against the soldiers of Imperial Japan.

In Volume 4 of his series, Mike takes us to Mother Russia. LHY: The Russian Front covers major campaigns and missions from the second half of the war in the east, introducing the Russian army to the series for the first time. A series of missions simulates actions from the October 1943 fighting in the Ukraine near Krivoi Rog, while others feature fights during the Russian 1944 summer offensive, Operation Bagration. All major Russian armor from late 1942 onward is covered, plus some additional late war German armored vehicles.

Mike and his team of testers and artists have proven that they can deliver the goods when it comes to engaging, exciting, challenging, and just plain fun WWII tactical combat games. We expect more of the same - with some tactical twists as he introduces the Russians - in LHY: The Russian Front.

Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. This month's new Baltic Empires is the game referred to in last month's brilliant and insightful clue of "A game set in the Baltic," and Bear Trap was previewed in August as "A new game using the Sekigahara system." Note that this is not a comprehensive list (nor will I preview EVERY game we have planned), so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. Over the coming 1-6 months, I anticipate that we will add:

  • A new Bot Project for a COIN-series game
  • Exciting new content for you Commands & Colors players
  • A Napoleonic-themed game from Ted Raicer
  • Another new Levy & Campaign series game
  • A new operational-level WWII game from Mark Simonitch

SDHistCon FALL 2021 – Online Convention Nov 12-14, 2021

SDHistCon’s FALL 2021 convention will be held Nov 12-14, 2021 and will be feature-packed with over 100 events including full play sessions, game demos, exclusive product sneak-peeks, seminars and interviews. Many of your favorite GMT designers – including several new to the GMT team – will be teaching their games and providing guided play sessions all 3 days.

In additional to designers-emeritus such as Mark Herman, Volko Ruhnke and Mark Miklos, you’ll also see developer Joe Dewhurst showcasing The British Way, newcomer Petr Mojzis demo’ing The Bell of Treason, as well as the elusive Non-Breaking Space discussing his much-anticipated Cross Bronx Expressway. And one of our favorite boardgaming ambassadors, Candice M. Harris, will be teaching and guiding players through a special session of Versailles 1919 where participants can win a copy of the game. Yours truly will also be getting in the act! I will be personally hosting a GMT Games gala event we’re calling “Inside GMT Night”, and for good reason. We’ll be bringing you exclusive designer input about their games as well as an “inside” look at what’s in GMT Games’ future (there will be prizes, too)!

Finally, SDHistCon will be the first convention to feature many of the games we’ve all been hearing so much about from the Zenobia Award, a diversity-inspired board game design contest for promising designers from oft-marginalized and underrepresented groups. You’ll get a chance to play Akar Bharadvaj’s Tyranny of Blood (1st Place Winner), a game about the Indian Caste System under British Colonialism. Alison Collins’ Wañay Kawsay (3rd Place Winner) gives us an introspective look at how our perceptions of history are formed and Winter Rabbit by Will Thompson (2nd Place Winner) lets us explore a pre-Columbian Cherokee economic system based on reciprocity and community need rather than supply and demand. Even more of the Zenobia Award’s finalists and their games will be featured at SDHistCon FALL 2021 and they are all worth engaging with!

Tickets are already on sale at the SDHistCon convention site, so grab your badges and join us. You can also follow @SDHistCon on Twitter for the most up-to-date information about the convention. As always, on behalf of the GMT Games team, I look forward to seeing you all there, Nov 12-14, 2021!

Coming This Week on InsideGMT!

Here's an update from Rachel on this week's upcoming InsideGMT articles:

Lots of great stuff this week on InsideGMT!

First up on Tuesday, we published another special piece of The Plum Island Horror narrative fiction from David Spangler. In this article, you will find another excerpt from David's Beware the Shade: Where Horrors Hide in the Daylight, an explosive exposé currently under a government restraining order, forbidding its publication for containing “material damaging to national security. Please note that this short story is a work of fiction and is not an example of gameplay. Enjoy!

Wednesday on InsideGMT, we cross-posted a fantastic article from Clio's Board Games assessing Winston Churchill through the lens of Mark Herman's Churchill. This article is part two in Clio's Prime Minister Ratings series, so if you would like to read part one discussing Robert Walpole through the lens of Imperial Struggle, you can find that here

The first InsideGMT article we posted on Thursday, written by Per Svennson
was the fourth in a series of The Last Hundred Yards After Action Report articles written by players participating in The Last Hundred Yards ladder play on BGG. You can find the first three articles in this series here. If you would like to participate in the LHY ladder play, please contact Mark Buetow through the LHY Facebook page or on BGG.

Also on Thursday of this week, we published a great article from Robert Baynosa introducing to the InsideGMT audience an optional variant for event card play using the Hitler's Reich AI Axis bot. Go check it out if you're interested!

Last but certainly not least, today on InsideGMT we published the the fifth and final article in a series from Stephen Rangazas, designer of The British Way, GMT's first COIN Series Multi-Pack. In this article, Stephen discusses The British Way: Cyprus, one of the four games in the multi-pack. If you would like to read the previous four articles in Stephen's series, you can find those here.

I invite you to visit InsideGMT.com this week to check out the aforementioned articles (and more!) from our team of excellent InsideGMT contributors.

Project Updates

Mons 1914 - Designer Geoffrey Phipps

Work continues on polishing following yet another playtest at Consimworld Expo in September. I am adjusting the contour colors to separate them a bit more, improving the way divisional affiliation is depicted on artillery counters, and making other small usability improvements. Plus catching some errata.

We played the four-player Meeting Engagement scenario, which led to an interesting series of tactical puzzles around the bridges.  Close fighting in the willow beds was tricky – small hills became critical vantage points for artillery and Machine Guns.

The image above shows a typical fight in the willow beds. Both armies were rushing into the bridge road column, and are now attempting to deploy, a task made difficult by artillery sitting on hills overlooking the wetlands. The column heads have taken losses, as have the Germans attempting to take the critical British bridge. - Geoff

Mr. President - Designer Gene Billingsley

As I mentioned last month, we are in the midst of the "Final Development and Testing" phase on Mr. President, with plenty of "near-final" art already completed.

At our Weekend at the Warehouse this past weekend, Rachel lead several "testing, demo, and cooperative play" sessions for most of the day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I helped with a few of the sessions and also ran a shorter similar session on Sunday morning. We got a lot of great feedback. It was gratifying to see how many folks really liked the depth of the game and its immersive story, and we really appreciated having many more critical eyes to help us catch any errors in the rules and charts. Thanks to all of you who sat down and learned, played, and helped us find those final nits to fix before production! I hope you enjoyed the experience!

Rachel and Jerry are teaming up to take on the world's problems

We are now working through our list of edits and fixes based on our testing last weekend. Thankfully, it is a MUCH shorter list than the one we compiled from Tempe in late August. That's progress! So we're tightening the rulebook, working on making sure there are chart location references every place in the game where it refers a player to check a particular chart, and doing a big of final balance tweaking to the game.

That last part - the balance tweaking - is SO HARD in a game with this many moving parts. It's difficult to make a tweak to improve one aspect of the game without accidentally causing an issue somewhere else. But we're getting there. And I have to say, at this point, regardless of how many customers buy it or like it, I am REALLY ENJOYING playing it, even after all these years. Mr. President is now the game I wanted it to be. Hopefully that will translate into many of our customers enjoying it, too. - Gene

Just when you think that the Middle East or Africa - or maybe Central/South Asia - are the most unstable regions, the Mr President world conspires - with unexpected cards and chart results and a gradual increase in problems that we noticed too late because we had our resources focused elsewhere - to create a big, fat mess in Central America!  Terror Groups and Rogue States and Civil Wars, OH MY! We had fun trying to clean up THIS ONE!

Next War Poland, 2nd Edition and Next War Supplement #3 - Designer Mitchell Land

Artwork has begun on the counters for Next War: Poland, 2nd Edition (NWP2E) and Supplement #3: (NWSS3). These are being done together as NWSS3 is serving as an update kit for the first edition of NWP. Part of that means ensuring that all the changed counters are on a single sheet which can be included in both products. Once we're happy with the counters, we'll start finalizing the map and Game Specific Rules changes as well as all the new additions and optional items being included in the Supplement. - Mitch

Panzer North Africa - Designer James M. Day

I've had a number of requests from customers to provide a complete list of the British, German, and Italian vehicles included in the game. Here's a comprehensive list. - Jim

Joe Dewhurst – Development Update
It’s been a relatively quiet month, but testing has continued for the The Bell of Treason, and we are currently refining a few aspects of the game to really bring to life the dilemmas facing the Czechoslovak people in 1938. The designer Petr Mojžíš will be showcasing the game in two online demos at SDHistCon in November, so I’d highly recommend attending one of those if you’d like to learn more about the game. I will also be making an appearance at SDHistCon with an online demo of The British Way: Cyprus, and the designers of A Gest of Robin Hood, Vijayanagara, and Cross Bronx Expressway will each be demoing their games as well. You can register to attend SDHistCon here: http://sdhist.com

Jason has otherwise been keeping me busy testing, designing, and developing various solo modes, not just for COIN but also for other games like Twilight Struggle: Red Sea. Solo design is always tricky, as you need to balance ease of use for the player with presenting not only a competitive challenge but also a good narrative experience. In multiplayer asymmetric games like People Power, we even need the solo opponents to sometimes cooperate with the player, as the game is balanced under the assumption that two of the factions (Reformers and NPA) will work together, at least some of the time, to take down the dominant Government faction. My initial design for this solo mode has proved to be a little too challenging for the player, and so I am currently working on dialing that down to present a more satisfying narrative experience. This month will also see me begin development work on the newly announced Bear Trap, which will feature a custom solo mode allowing you to play either side against an automated opponent. Look out for more info on that in a future update or InsideGMT article! - Joe Dewhurst, Staff Developer
