Hi everyone!
I hope this update finds you well. We're sending it out a few days early this month because we have our Weekend at the Warehouse that starts on Thursday (with some designers coming in on Wednesday) so we need to clear our schedules for that event. I'm very much looking forward to seeing many old friends and making some new ones later this week!
I'd like to draw your attention to this month's new P500 games (although not so much the games themselves—we'll give you plenty of those details below). Let's focus on their designers and design teams as a microcosm of the ways that GMT is growing at present, both in terms of the mixing of different levels of experience and interest as well as the synergies that we continue to encourage and from which we benefit.
Rick Young is one of my favorite designers—well, actually, one of my favorite people. Rick has been designing with us for about twenty years now, since the days of his hit WWII Strategy game Europe Engulfed. Rick likes to design WWII games, and that's mostly what he does (although if you haven't played Leaping Lemmings, which is VERY far from a WWII game, you're missing a game that's a ton of backstabbing fun!). As many of you know, Rick also pioneered the Fast Action Battles Series that spanned three games, trying to bring smart, deep (mostly) WWII Operational games to the table in a quicker-playing format. He's improving that formula with his newest series that we're introducing today in a dual pack volume with a Bulge game he designed and a North Africa game from Michael Gustavsson. This series is even quicker-playing than FAB, and I think it's a more elegant design that, because it uses counters instead of blocks, is also easier to jump into (and to play solo).
So, our first new P500 today is the brainchild of this 20-year veteran designer who has tons of experience with operational and strategic WWII games, is passionate about designing them, and has proven to be unselfish in the extreme in terms of allowing other designers to use his system—a trend that he is continuing with the Battle Command series. It's aimed at our WWII wargamers, and I think those of you who enjoy playing WWII games are going to love it. More to the point, Jason Carr, our Director of Development, along with several of our development team, agrees with me and has given Rick as much support as possible to get this new series onto P500 and on your game tables.
On the flip side of our new P500s, we have Borikén, a game from designer Julio Nazario. This is not Julio's first design, but none of us at GMT knew him until his game caught the attention of Volko, Jason, Harold, Ken, and a few others during last year's Zenobia Awards design competition, where he did very well. Julio is a prolific crafter of games, and honestly many of his games don't fit GMT thematically because they're not historically based. But Julio brought us Borikén, a rich cooperative game that tells the story of the Taíno people of Borikén—modern-day Puerto Rico—and their resistance against the occupation of Spanish Conquistadors in the 15th and 16th centuries. Julio has crafted a gem of a game here, and it's aimed at our customers who love playing historical strategy games. It's built with streamlined euro-like systems, but the gameplay is set solidly in history, with the passion brought from Julio representing his cultural heritage in this strategy game. As you might expect, the game exemplifies the passion that Julio has for his subject, something that our team—and especially developer Ken Kuhn—was quick to pick up on.
So this is what we're doing. As with Rick and Julio and their games today, we are blending a mix of really diverse but always talented and passionate people to create our ongoing line of strategy games. Our design teams—totaling 104 designers now—are filled with a mix of designers with a variety of experience levels, skills, and passions. We just ask, "What are you passionate about?" when considering their next game(s) because we know that their passion and skill, when mixed with our development and art teams, will create games that are special. So, with the help of an awesomely-talented and people-friendly team of developers working with our Director of Development Jason Carr and an art department under the direction of Mark Simonitch and Terry Leeds (whose work continues to amaze and impress me), we're bringing the immersive stories that these diverse and massively talented designers create to your game tables as challenging historical strategy games that you can play solo or with your friends.
Enjoy the games!

GMT One - Jason Carr. April is always a busy month at GMT; our twice-a-year Weekend at the Warehouse is always a busy time! But even more busy is all the work that goes into preparing prototypes to show at the Warehouse and coordinating all the designers' schedules to make sure I get to see everyone I need to while I'm there. This month, I'll be in attendance again, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all there. Please stop me and say hi.
GMT One doesn't stop moving forward just because of the Weekend at the Warehouse. This month we are showing off something we've been working on for a few months—the new Calixto card-based bots for Cuba Libre! Kevin Crooks approached me about a year ago with interest in getting a set of bots together for Cuba Libre, and I knew he was the right person to do it. Kevin did the majority of the development work for the Tây Sơn bots in Fall of Saigon, so he brings a wealth of experience to the project, and we're very excited to share more about these bots in the future.
Additionally, we are super excited about the Third Edition rules for Fields of Fire. Our rules team, Andrew Stead and Colin Parsons, have done an unbelievable amount of work to find the right way to present rules to players. Most of this work has been consolidating clarifications and reorganizing rules, moving rules between the rulebook and mission booklets, and editing, editing, editing the final result. This project would never have happened without Andrew and Colin's passion for the game—even before we decided to do a Third Edition of the rules, Andrew and Colin were answering questions on Facebook and BGG and supporting the game; that's how I knew they would be the right people to tackle the rules and help more people learn Ben Hull's amazing game.
We're really excited to get these rules into gamers' hands, so we're opening a Beta test of the new rulebook this month. The rules are still in rough form—not laid out professionally—but they are ready to use for both new and returning players. One caveat: If you are expecting a "simple" version of Fields of Fire, that's not what this project is about. We have done our best to show Ben's vision of the game—one that focuses on command and control, with emergent situations and lots of difficult decisions—and the gameplay is exactly the same as it was with the first and second edition rules. If you previously tried to learn the game and couldn't crack it, please come help us make sure we're making it possible for you to learn. If you are a veteran player and know the game well, come check out what we've done and help us polish the urban combat and vehicle rules. Either way, we would love to hear your thoughts. - Jason

Playtesters/Help Wanted! On an ongoing basis, I'll use this section to let you know which of our design teams currently need extra testers. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the team members for the game you are interested in at the links below. We greatly appreciate you helping us test our games and make them better! Thank you!
- Balance Testing for Downfall. John Butterfield and team are in need of testers to help finish up testing on Downfall via Vassal. You can sign up to test Downfall here.
- Testers needed for Fields of Fire Third Edition Rules. We are ready to start to test the new Third Edition ruleset for Fields of Fire and need testers—whether you have Vol I or Vol II, we can use your help. Testing is via physical copies, so please make sure you own Fields of Fire Vol I or II. You can sign up to test Fields of Fire here.
- We are beginning playtesting for the COIN Series game China's War. If you would like to help test China's War, we're looking for testers to run games on their own or participate in games via Discord (or make your own print and play kit). The game is very stable, but we need help tuning events and Victory thresholds. You can sign up to test China's War here.

GMT Merchandise: This month, we would like to highlight the Gandhi merchandise we have on our site in conjunction with the 2nd printing of Gandhi going on P500. Also, don’t forget about the Twilight Struggle drinkware we added last month!
Note that our GMT Merchandise store is located on the Spring site, and ALL MERCHANDISE ORDERS AND FULFILLMENT ARE HANDLED BY SPRING, NOT BY GMT (so please don't try to order through or seek help from our office folks; they—for once—will have no idea how to help you).

Brian Reynolds has released a completely reworked 2.0 VASSAL Module for Nevsky! We let you all know back in November of '21 that the brilliant Brian Reynolds has again created something awesome for fans of GMT Games, especially for those who like Volko's Levy and Campaign series. Brian's newest creation back then was a VASSAL module for Volko's upcoming Almoravid. NOW Brian has created a completely rebuilt VASSAL 2.0 module for Nevsky, the first game in Volko's Levy & Campaign series. Click Here to go to the free download page for the module, and check out the beauty and utility of Brian's VASSAL mods for yourself!
I want to personally thank Brian for the many, many hours and the great skill that he has put into these modules as a labor of love. As someone who has greatly enjoyed Brian's computer games over the years, I know he could be using his time (and getting paid!) to make more great computer games. It's a great compliment to us here at GMT that he has chosen to apply his skills to creating VASSAL modules to help players enjoy our games. Thank you, Brian! We appreciate you and all you do to help our hobby!
