Hi everyone!
Excitement is high here at the GMT Offices with our Weekend at the Warehouse happening this week. It looks like we'll be hosting over 100 gamers and about a dozen of our designers and developers starting late Wednesday (officially Thursday, but we usually have "early birds" as well as some designers in the warehouse Wednesday afternoon). Mike Bertucelli and I will spend a couple hours Wednesday afternoon playing his Wolfpack design. If you're in town early, feel free to drop by and check it out with us. Then we'll throw everyone out (nicely) except team members and office/warehouse staff by about 6:00 Wednesday evening and start our "Thank You" Tri-Tip cookout just for them on Wednesday night before the majority of the attendees start arriving on Thursday.
I personally love these Weekend at the Warehouse events! They ARE a lot of work, especially for the office and warehouse folks. But the work is far outweighed by the opportunity these events provide for us to revisit, strengthen, and begin new gaming relationships with our customers. I've been especially excited this time to see a couple of long-time friends, Mark Ruggeiro and John Leggat, at the Weekend. They've both in their own way been very helpful to me and to GMT over these many years (and they have also been customers since GMT began back in 1990), and I so appreciate them and this opportunity to spend some time with them. Relationships matter way more than games to me, and these Weekends are a great opportunity to grow those relationships while enjoying our shared love of games together. I hope that all of you will get an opportunity to attend at least one of our Weekends at some point in your gaming journey.
I'm also really excited because we got a notice last Friday that a few advance designer copies of Mr. President just shipped to us. The note said that they should arrive later today! So, I'm hopeful that we'll have a copy to show off at the Weekend. I'm also feeling that mix of nervous anticipation that always goes along with seeing a project that you've worked so long on become a "real" game in a box. Hopefully you Weekend attendees will get to check out the final product later this week.

This time he's created a 22 minute Introductory video for our upcoming Plantaganet, Cousins War for England, 1459-1485, the fourth game in Volko's Levy & Campaign series. GMT One - Jason Carr. It's always exciting when new games show up, especially after all the hard work that goes into them. This month, I got advance copies of The British Way and People Power, so rather than give my usual solo development update, I figured I would put on my "Director of Game Development" hat and give a behind the scenes peek and talk about the steps that I go through with a game when I get my copy. I want to be clear these are not samples but actual production copies that are air mailed to us for promotion so we are prepared for when the games actually ship. Samples are checked much earlier in the production process.
Sometimes it's been months since we have seen the game, so having a copy to refresh on the rules and components is crucial! So the first thing I do is check all the components and make sure they match my expectations. At this point nothing should be wrong, but occasionally we do catch mistakes, and we can still fix them before they go to customers. For example, a misprinted player aid card could be rush printed, shipped to the warehouse, and then swapped into each box before shipping it. This is incredibly labor intensive, which is why we try to make sure the games are p-e-r-f-e-c-t when they ship from the factory.
After checking everything thoroughly, I set up each scenario included with the game and walk through each example in the rulebook, as well as any examples of play, including for the solo system. Since these are the way that players learn the game, it's important that we ensure they're completely correct. If there are mistakes, we want to be able to mention them with an included pack slip or post an FAQ online immediately. Again, these were checked thoroughly by testers and proofreaders but sometimes mistakes get through and being accountable for that is very important too.
Of course I also post pictures of the games on social media, as many of you know. It's a great chance to answer any last questions folks have about the games and to share some of the excitement that comes along with them. These games will stay on my table for a few weeks while I refresh and prepare to answer questions online. I keep notes of anything that might need clarified or corrected (so far, nothing for People Power or The British Way). As an aside, I have multiple folding tables just for keeping games set up and poking at them to keep fresh on rules. Keeping all of that in my head is quite the workout! Hopefully Mr. President will show up on one of those tables very soon!
Until then, enjoy the games! ~ Jason
