Hi everyone!

Excitement is high here at the GMT Offices with our Weekend at the Warehouse happening this week. It looks like we'll be hosting over 100 gamers and about a dozen of our designers and developers starting late Wednesday (officially Thursday, but we usually have "early birds" as well as some designers in the warehouse Wednesday afternoon). Mike Bertucelli and I will spend a couple hours Wednesday afternoon playing his Wolfpack design. If you're in town early, feel free to drop by and check it out with us. Then we'll throw everyone out (nicely) except team members and office/warehouse staff by about 6:00 Wednesday evening and start our "Thank You" Tri-Tip cookout just for them on Wednesday night before the majority of the attendees start arriving on Thursday.

I personally love these Weekend at the Warehouse events! They ARE a lot of work, especially for the office and warehouse folks. But the work is far outweighed by the opportunity these events provide for us to revisit, strengthen, and begin new gaming relationships with our customers. I've been especially excited this time to see a couple of long-time friends, Mark Ruggeiro and John Leggat, at the Weekend. They've both in their own way been very helpful to me and to GMT over these many years (and they have also been customers since GMT began back in 1990), and I so appreciate them and this opportunity to spend some time with them. Relationships matter way more than games to me, and these Weekends are a great opportunity to grow those relationships while enjoying our shared love of games together. I hope that all of you will get an opportunity to attend at least one of our Weekends at some point in your gaming journey.

I'm also really excited because we got a notice last Friday that a few advance designer copies of Mr. President just shipped to us. The note said that they should arrive later today! So, I'm hopeful that we'll have a copy to show off at the Weekend. I'm also feeling that mix of nervous anticipation that always goes along with seeing a project that you've worked so long on become a "real" game in a box. Hopefully you Weekend attendees will get to check out the final product later this week.

Another Beautiful Period Video from Volko Introducing Plantaganet. Many of you remember the amazing video that Volko created last year to help players better understand and appreciate the world of Inferno and get a head-start on gameplay. Well, to the benefit of us all, Volko is at it again! This time he's created a 22 minute Introductory video for our upcoming Plantaganet, Cousins War for England, 1459-1485, the fourth game in Volko's Levy & Campaign series. To view the video, just click on the image below.

This Month's Box Back Sneak Peek. Here's this month's sneak peek at the final box back for our upcoming Downfall. Enjoy!

GMT One - Jason Carr. It's always exciting when new games show up, especially after all the hard work that goes into them. This month, I got advance copies of The British Way and People Powerso rather than give my usual solo development update, I figured I would put on my "Director of Game Development" hat and give a behind the scenes peek and talk about the steps that I go through with a game when I get my copy. I want to be clear these are not samples but actual production copies that are air mailed to us for promotion so we are prepared for when the games actually ship. Samples are checked much earlier in the production process.

Sometimes it's been months since we have seen the game, so having a copy to refresh on the rules and components is crucial! So the first thing I do is check all the components and make sure they match my expectations. At this point nothing should be wrong, but occasionally we do catch mistakes, and we can still fix them before they go to customers. For example, a misprinted player aid card could be rush printed, shipped to the warehouse, and then swapped into each box before shipping it. This is incredibly labor intensive, which is why we try to make sure the games are p-e-r-f-e-c-t when they ship from the factory.

After checking everything thoroughly, I set up each scenario included with the game and walk through each example in the rulebook, as well as any examples of play, including for the solo system. Since these are the way that players learn the game, it's important that we ensure they're completely correct. If there are mistakes, we want to be able to mention them with an included pack slip or post an FAQ online immediately. Again, these were checked thoroughly by testers and proofreaders but sometimes mistakes get through and being accountable for that is very important too.

Of course I also post pictures of the games on social media, as many of you know. It's a great chance to answer any last questions folks have about the games and to share some of the excitement that comes along with them. These games will stay on my table for a few weeks while I refresh and prepare to answer questions online. I keep notes of anything that might need clarified or corrected (so far, nothing for People Power or The British Way). As an aside, I have multiple folding tables just for keeping games set up and poking at them to keep fresh on rules. Keeping all of that in my head is quite the workout! Hopefully Mr. President will show up on one of those tables very soon!

Until then, enjoy the games! ~ Jason

Resisting Revolution is a sequel expansion to Volko Ruhnke & Jeff Grossman’s Cuba Libre, covering the period from the rebel victory in 1959 through to the climactic showdown with the US in 1962. During this time, the new regime became increasingly alienated from the US, began to grow closer to the Soviet Union, and faced internal dissent from several sectors of Cuban society.

The main expansion game charts the processes and actors that shaped Cuba during this period of struggle, with four players controlling either the new revolutionary Government, US-backed attempts to destabilise and overthrow the government, the growing Soviet influence and eventually military presence on the island, or the urban and rural Resistance to the revolution.

Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. This month's new Resisting Revolution was teased last month as "An expansion/sequel for one of our most popular COIN games." Note that this is not a comprehensive list (nor will I preview EVERY game we have planned), so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. Over the coming 1-6 months, I anticipate that we will add:
  • A new game from Matt Calkins
  • An operational wargame of the cold war going hot in the 1980s
  • A game set in the early 20th Century, pre-WWI
  • An expanded edition of a game set in the American Civil War

Harold Buchanan and the San Diego Historical Games Convention (SDHist) is proud to announce the first SDHistCon East. This event will be from August 18-20, hosted by the U.S. Naval War College Museum in Newport, RI.

On Friday, August 18, the convention will make available a series of historical tours. This will include a tour of the Battle of Rhode Island battlefield by Mark Miklos, designer of GMT’s Battles of the American Revolution series. Tours of other local historical sites, including Battleship Cove (featuring the USS Massachusetts and many other notable ships), are in the works.

On Friday evening, the convention will move to the Museum at the US Naval War College to play games and enjoy the facility. On Saturday and Sunday, the gaming will continue. There will also be time out for a tour of the historic wargaming facilities on campus, conducted by experts associated with the command. Mix with hobby and professional gamers and take in the history that surrounds you! GMT designers Mark Herman (a former USNWC Adjunct), Mark Miklos, Volko Ruhnke, Joe Balkoski, and others are confirmed guests.

Space considerations mean only a limited number of tickets are available, and those are currently sold out. But a waitlist is available for those with strong intention of attending.

"We Built This City": New 3-Player Variant for Urban Sprawl. Here's more cool "free stuff" for those of you who enjoy Chad Jensen's games. I love it when one of our designers likes another designer's game enough to create some additional content for it. That's what happened here. Cross Bronx Expressway designer Non-Breaking Space loves Chad Jensen's games and has created a well-thought-out Variant Scenario for Urban Sprawl. He has also written an article in Inside GMT with links to everything you need to play this new variant for Chad's Urban Sprawl

The Article is here and the pdf file with all the details for the Variant Scenario is here.

Enjoy this new variant! And many thanks to Non-Breaking Space for taking the time and care to create it!

Here's an update from Rachel on this week's upcoming InsideGMT articles:

Lots of great stuff this week on InsideGMT!

Today on InsideGMT, we published an article from Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East developer Fred Schachter introducing the game's new VASSAL module created by Joel Toppen. You can find that article here. And if you'd like to download the new VASSAL mod for ACME, you can find that linked on the game page here.

On Thursday, we will be posting the second part in a great article series from Order & Opportunity designer VPJ Arponen discussing the different types of cards you will see in the game. If you would like to read the previous article in this series, you can find that here.

And in case you missed it earlier this month, we posted an article from Peter Evans discussing Allied strategy in the forthcoming design, Battle Command: The Bulge. The previous article from Peter discussing German strategy in the game can be found here. For an overview of the game, and the battle it represents, see the first article in the series: An Introduction to Battle Command: The Bulge.

Enjoy!

Have a great week!

Project Updates/Examples of Play

Battle Command Vol. 1: Operation Crusader & The Battle of the Bulge - Designer Rick Young

I’m happy to report that the rules have undergone a major rewrite, simplifying them while eliminating questions that were generated by the playtesters. Crusader is entering the first serious round of playtest since the first round concentrated on Bulge. I am very pleased with the progress. The playtesters are reporting that the game is fun, fast-playing, and easy to get into. This is exactly what we were aiming for. I am anxious for this to get into your hands. For most gamers, it will be three hours or less for them to play to completion. - Rick Young

Border Reivers - Designer Ed Beach

Well, I have played deep into both a Solo and a 6-player game of Border Reivers with the final components since they arrived 9 days ago. We did find two cards that were misprinted (affecting the Solo game only): GMT Games is being terrific and doing a quick print run of just those two cards so they can be inserted into each game as they ship out.

I couldn't be more pleased at this point. Everything looks fantastic. So today it was time for some fun. I went ahead and set up what the two most famous events in Border History look like in-game and we took some photos.

So have a detailed look at the Rescue of Kinmont Willie and the Battle of Flodden Field.

Borikén - Designer Julio Nazario

As Borikén closes in on 400 preorders, I have been hard at work ironing out all three games included in the box that you will be able to play individually, or as a campaign.

The first major update is that the competitive Pre-1493 game will also be playable solo. In the solo mode, you will be trying to complete 4 randomly selected objectives in the span of 15 centuries (turns) which is around the time it took for the Taíno culture to develop from the different native tribes. The cooperative 1493-1528 game has been further developed from the original 7 chapter campaign, to a shorter experience that will focus on historical objectives that will need to be completed by following the historical timeline. Last but not least, the cooperative survival game Post-1528 will focus on escaping a Spanish settled island by using guerrilla warfare to open areas that will allow you to escape. The closer you get to winning the game, your available actions will become more limited.

All these divergent paths were made possible with the introduction of unique tracks for each game, which all affect the increasing spawn rate of enemies, while also introducing minor changes in rules for each game, for a unique experience with a similar system. As a Puerto Rican, I am beyond proud of what this game is shaping up to be, not just from a historical perspective, but from a design point of view of bringing an experience that is enjoyable to all that play it. I am very much looking forward for it to get to the next stage in development once it reaches the P500 goal, thank you all for the continued support! - Julio

Imperial Eagles: Air War in the Pacific, 1941-43 - Developer Jack Beckman

Imperial Eagles, Volume VI in the Down In Flames series, takes you to the Pacific and builds upon the Wild Blue Yonder rules to add in Carrier Campaigns as well as Land Campaigns. We’re in the process of finalizing the Carrier rules, which will be updated from the rules in the previous Pacific volumes (Zero! and Corsairs and Hellcats). Some of the Land Campaigns will be new and some updates. The process of shaking down the campaigns for play balance has just begun. There’s still a ways to go also with finalizing some of the newer rules, but things are moving along.

In the Shadows - Co-Designer Joe Schmidt

Chris, Dan, and I are super excited by the support we have gotten for the game! Dan was recently at Circle DC demoing In the Shadows and got some really lovely feedback on the 2-player game. We are currently working on final dev work on the solo game, with huge thanks to Rachel Carpenter for her support. Can't wait to get this on your tables! - Joe

Order & Opportunity - Designer V.P.J. Arponen

Hi all,

"Order & Opportunity: Making of the Post-Cold War World Order" has been on the P500 list for some weeks now and we're making steady progress towards the 500 preorders mark. Thank you everyone for their support!

I would like to use this update to draw your attention to a set ofplaythrough videos available on YouTube showcasing the game play.Below is a link to a playlist of nine videos. For your convenience, each video is short, about 10 minutes, but altogether they give you a multi-turn impression of how the game plays. More videos will be added in due course:

Under the Southern Cross is on the horizon!

I received my advance copy of USC yesterday. The components look great! The playbook is probably the best of the series. Here's a photo of what's in the box. - Mike
