[Youse, Brian]

It is with very heavy hearts that we have to let his many fans and admirers know that our friend and for the past almost twenty five years fellow MMP'er Dean (Essig) passed away peacefully in his sleep.

His children plan on a memorial in his home town, probably several weeks in the future, we will be sure to post whatever information we have once we get it.

This is quite a shock to us as to how quickly he was overcome by this terrible disease.

[Pergolizzi, Tony]

Truly sad news. My condolences and best wishes go out to his family and all his friends which includes us.

I don't know a lot about his personal life so I'll just ask this one question. How old was Dean?

Tony Pergolizzi

Shane Woyak - Mar 26, 2024 5:31 am (#124875 Total: 125097)

[Woyak, Shane]

A very sad day for the war gaming community and certainly devastating for his family. I pray that they can find some peace and grace.

I would be interested in donating to a flower arrangement or something to help the family if that is made available.

Rest in peace, brother in arms, your watch is over. 😓

Shane

May his memory live on in the many hours of enjoyment people will reap from his game design efforts.   RIP to a great man, and condolences for his family.  May they find comfort in this time of loss.

Ed Wimble - Mar 26, 2024 7:44 am (#124878 Total: 125097)

[Wimble, Ed]

Very sad.  He was a good guy.  Rest in peace doesn't seem to fit for a fellow who loved living like he did.  All the same, my condolences to his family and friends.

Wayne Downey - Mar 26, 2024 8:26 am (#124879 Total: 125097)

[Downey, Wayne]

How old was Dean?

He graduated from high school in 1979. So about 63.

Larry Brien - Mar 26, 2024 9:01 am (#124882 Total: 125097)

[Brien, Larry]

I'm grateful to have met both Dean and Sara back in the mid 90's. Dean had a Birthday earlier this month. RIP Dean and my condolences to the Essig family.

Thomas Prowell - Mar 26, 2024 9:05 am (#124883 Total: 125097)

[Prowell, Thomas]

I got to meet Dean in person on a couple of occasions - once at a HomerCon, and once when he and Dave Powell came out to Seattle as a guest of Dragonflight. I also corresponded with him on a number of occasions, and of course, he was very encouraging when I was designing 3BoM. His generosity of spirit and accessibility were really inspiring to me in the early '90s when I was getting more deeply involved in the hobby. I feel like I owe him so much.

Steve Newhouse - Mar 26, 2024 10:08 am (#124884 Total: 125097)

[Newhouse, Steve]

We will miss you, Dean. My heart goes out to the Essig family

Arrigo Velicogna - Mar 26, 2024 10:17 am (#124885 Total: 125097)

[Velicogna, Arrigo]

It is a sad day. I never met him in person, but we chatted on messenger. Back in time he provided insightful help to one of my students doing a game on Antietam. We chatted about ACW several times. I enjoyed basically all his games. It was one of the first designer I came to appreciate back in the previous century. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will carry on.  My deepest condolences to his family.

Dave Demko - Mar 26, 2024 10:19 am (#124886 Total: 125097)

[Demko, Dave]

RIP Dean, and sincere condolences to the Essigs.

Dean and I disagreed on a number of matters, large and small, but that never made us dislike each other or prevented us from collaborating. His frank and direct style of hashing out wargame design problems exemplified what I've seen of Dean's general approach to dealing with people. Dean was solid and reliable.
